Planning for a metro system began in the early 2000s but China's elevated Xiamen BRT was only opened in 2008. The initial phase of construction of the metro system was compiled as the Xiamen Urban Rail Transit Construction Plan 2011–2020 on the December 24, 2010 and was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in May 11, 2012.[1][2] The construction started in November 13, 2013.[3] Xiamen Urban Rail Transit Group founded for construction and operation.
Approved phase of system development includes three lines (1, 2, 3) with 62 stations, 79.04 kilometres (49.11 mi) in length, The construction cost is projected to be 50.37 billion yuan.
Approved lines

Line 1, with 24 stations, 31.5 kilometres (19.6 mi) (30.3 km useful) length, 50 min duration of trip and 20.39 billion yuan cost of construction, will be completed around December 31, 2016. The line will go from South to North. The depot will be situated at the northern end and will be Xiamen Metro's principal depot. The line will go through Northern and Central railway stations and will connect island (with 9 stations) and mainland (with 14 stations) parts of city through dam (with 1 station). Future plans
Xiamen city government plans to build a urban-suburban metro network comprising six lines, 246.2 kilometres (153.0 mi) in length, with 138 stations.[4] Lines 1 and 3 will be extended further North by 6 stations, 9.5 kilometres (5.9 mi) length and by 12 stations, 22.6 kilometres (14.0 mi) length respectively. Line 4 with 31 stations and 40.4 kilometres (25.1 mi) length will be reconstructed from BRT line mainly. Line 5 will have 21 stations and 41.6 kilometres (25.8 mi) length.
