QUT Gardens Point was a ferry wharf in the Brisbane CBD used by the CityCat on the Brisbane River. It was destroyed during the 2010–2011 Queensland floods when the Brisbane River burst its banks and the terminal buckled under the fast moving torrent. A temporary terminal was in place until the permanent replacement permanent ferry terminal was built, the new terminal designed to be more flood resilient and have improved accessibility for people with a mobility or vision impairment. The new terminal opened on the 14th April 2015.
Location
It is within walking distance of the QUT Gardens Point campus and the City Botanic Gardens. The northern access to the Goodwill Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists lies to the south of this wharf. The Queensland Parliament is a short walk to the east. It connects to Brisbane CBD via William Street to the North-East.
Description
The Wharf comprises a single long jetty and a pontoon with two docking stations. However, there is not enough space for two City cats to dock at the same time and therefore only one of the docking stations is used at a time. A passenger waiting area exists a few metres from the wharf, under the raised portion of Riverside Express Motorway which is just beyond and to the east of the wharf. The wharf is surrounded by mangrove trees which continue downriver to join up with the mangroves that form a part of the mangrove walk in the City Botanic Gardens.
Destruction in the January 2011 floods and subsequent re-opening
In January 2011 the wharf was destroyed during the devastating floods and the rebuilding works were expected to take months.[1]
The terminal was re-opened on 18 April after temporary measures were put in place by the Brisbane City Council to restore CityCat operations.[2]
