Mariusz Łukasz Wlazły (born 4 August 1983) is a Polish volleyball player, a member of Poland men's national volleyball team and Polish club PGE Skra Bełchatów, a participant of the 2008 Olympic Games, 2014 World Champion, a silver medalist of the 2006 World Championship, eight-time Polish Champion (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014). Wlazły won the best athlete in the World award in 2014 according to SportAccord.[1]
Personal life
Mariusz Wlazły was born in Wieluń, Poland. He studied at School of Management and Administration in Opole. In June 2006 Mariusz married to Paulina (née Drewicz). On January 13, 2009, his wife gave birth to their first child, a son named Arkadiusz. On November 23, 2015 his second son was born.[2]
Career
Clubs
Wlazły has played in PGE Skra Bełchatów for over 10 years. During this time he has won eight titles of Polish Champion (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014) and six times won Polish Cup (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012). With PGE Skra he won the bronze medal at the 2007-08 Indesit Champions League and also was individually awarded "Best Spiker".[3] He won the bronze medal at the CEV Champions League 2009/2010, playing with Skra Bełchatów and was awarded "Best Scorer".[4] Mariusz win the silver medal and the Most Valuable Player award in the CEV Champions League 2011/2012.[5] He has two silver medals from the Club World Championships from 2009 and 2010 and one bronze medal from the 2012. He won his 8th title of Polish Champion 2014 with PGE Skra Bełchatów.[6] On 8 October 2014 his team won ENEA Polish SuperCup 2014.[7] His club played in Final four of 2014–15 CEV Champions League, but lost with Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, Berlin Recycling Volleys and did not achieve any medal. On 6 May 2015 he won with PGE Skra Bełchatów bronze medal of Polish Championship.[8] In May he signed a contract with Qatari club Al-Arabi Doha on the duration of the Emir Cup (only 2 matches). All money earned on this contract went to his foundation for student's scholarships.[9] After the end of the tournament he returned to representing PGE Skra Bełchatów. On February 7, 2016 he played with PGE Skra and won the 2016 Polish Cup after beating ZAKSA in the final.[10] In April 2016 he was a member of the same team which won a bronze medal in the 2015–16 PlusLiga championship.[11]
National team
He was a member of the Polish national team U21, which won the title of U21 World Champion 2003. He made his debut in the senior squad during 2004 summer season and by FIVB World League 2005 he had already established himself as one of the most important players of the national team. In 2006, he won second place at FIVB World Championship held in Japan. During that tournament he was nominated for the Most Valuable Player award, losing only to Brazilian star Giba. In 2010 he gave up playing for Polish national team because of a conflict with management.
On 8 April 2014, Wlazły was appointed to the Polish national team after 4 years of absence, by head coach Stephane Antiga. On 16 August 2014 he was appointed to squad at World Championship held in Poland.[12][13] On 21 September 2014 the team, including Wlazły, won a title of World Champion 2014. He received two individual awards for Best Opposite Spiker and Most Valuable Player at the Championship.[14][15][16][17] On the day of winning the gold medal, Wlazły announced his retirement from the Polish national team.[18] On 27 October 2014 he received a state award granted by the Polish President Bronisław Komorowski - Officer's Cross of Polonia Restituta for outstanding sports achievements and to promote Polish in the world.[19] He was runner-up in Polish Sportspersonality of the Year 2014 and Poland men's national volleyball team took title of the Best Team 2014 in the same competition. He was awarded The best athlete in the world in 2014 via SportAccord.
