Jason Binn is an American publisher and entrepreneur known for founding Niche Media (and does business now as www.greengale.com)[2] and DuJour Media. Binn is also an executive director of the private jet company JetSmarter.[3][4]
Publishing
Binn founded Ocean Drive magazine, a luxury publication focusing on Miami, in 1993.[5] In 1998, he founded Niche Media, a publisher of regional luxury magazines including Hamptons Magazine, Aspen Peak, Boston Common, Capitol File, Gotham, Los Angeles Confidential, Vegas Magazine[6] and Michigan Avenue.
Under Binn, Niche Media created custom publications for Art Basel Miami Beach, Wynn Las Vegas and the Short Hills Mall for the Taubman real estate organization.[7][8] Niche Media was acquired by Greenspun Media Group in 2007.[9]
Binn served as chief adviser to Kevin Ryan in 2010,[10] the founder and CEO of online luxury retailer Gilt. In January 2016, Ryan sold Gilt to Hudson’s Bays Company, which includes Saks, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth.[11][12] Binn later left Niche Media and became chairman of Gilt; he continues to serve as Chief Adviser in the newly acquired company.[13]
In 2012, Binn founded DuJour Media,[14] a quarterly print publication and digital magazine for wealthy readers, sent to Gilt’s database of subscribers.[15][13]
Binn has been credited with breaking major stories, including an exclusive interview with Dennis Rodman on his visit to North Korea as a guest of Kim Jong-un,[14] and Donald Sterling after a racist rant where Stirling admitted he should have paid off his ex-girlfriend.[16]
Other Activity
Binn partnered with James Cohen, the son of Robert Cohen of Hudson News, and Dufry, an operator of Duty Free shops at worldwide ports.[17]
In August 2016, InList, a nightlife and events booking app,[18] named Binn Chief Advisor to its Board of Directors.[19]
Education
Binn originally attended the University of Cincinnati; he then graduated from the Boston University[1] College Of Communications Cum Laude, with honors.[20]
Awards and recognition
In 2005 Binn was profiled in Forbes magazine's "Forbes 400"[21] and was awarded Ernst & Young's "Entrepreneur of the Year."[22]
In 2007, he was inducted into the American Advertising Federation's “Advertising Hall of Achievement”.[23]
In 2008, Binn was listed in Crain’s “40 Under 40” list of successful entrepreneurs.[24]
In 2008, Binn received the Boston University's Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Profession for his work in the field of communications and media.[25]
In fall 2012, Crain's New York cited Binn as making print magazines successful in a time when print is losing market to digital media[26]
Personal life
Binn was born Jason Frederick Binn to Moreton I. Binn and Penny I. Binn[27][1] in Roslyn, New York.[28][29]
He married Haley Lieberman in December 2003.[27] The couple separated in 2016.[30]
