Carnival Legend is a Spirit-class cruise ship. Along with the majority of her sisters, she is owned by Carnival Corporation & plc, and operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Built by Kværner Masa-Yards at its Helsinki New Shipyard in Helsinki, Finland, she was floated out on December 17, 2001, and christened by English actress and author Dame Judi Dench in Harwich, Essex, UK, on August 21, 2002.[2][4] Her maiden voyage, Carnival's first cruise in Europe, was a three night journey from Harwich to Amsterdam and return.[5]

Eighty percent of Carnival Legend's staterooms have ocean views and eighty percent of those have private balconies.[6] She was the first Carnival ship to offer alternative dining options and an onboard wedding chapel.[7]

Ports of Call

In 2013 Carnival Legend offered a series of Baltic and Mediterranean cruises from April to November. The ship has since offered a 7-day cruise to the Western Caribbean from Tampa, Florida.

Following the success of the Carnival Spirit, Carnival Legend underwent a major dry-dock refurbishment in February 2014. In August 2014 Carnival Legend departed Tampa and made its way through the Panama Canal to reposition to Australia. Carnival Legend is the second Carnival ship to feature the Green Thunder at-sea water slide and is scheduled to sail seasonally from Sydney on 8- to 12-day cruises to the Pacific Islands from September 2014 to April 2015 and current.[8]

Carnival Legend currently sails Australian itineraries in the southern summer, and Alaskan cruises in the northern summer.

Accidents and incidents

Bottle smashing issue

On August 21, 2002, during the christening ceremony, Judi Dench took three attempts to smash the bottle against the ship's hull, aided by ship's captain Claudio Cupisti. The third attempt successfully smashed the bottle but the force sent the flowing champagne all over her. She took the soaking in good spirits and announced, "I am godmother to 13 godchildren and a god-dog - now I'm godmother to a great ship."[9][10]

Listing

On July 13, 2005, Carnival Legend departed Tortola and was heading back to New York City. At 5:10 PM, the ship suddenly listed degrees to the port side while making a hard starboard turn, resulting in some minor injuries. The crew came on to the intercom a few minutes later to announce to passengers that there had been a computer glitch. Captain Claudio Cupisti had to take manual control of the wheel in order to prevent the ship from capsizing. Crew members indicated that a list of that degree was without precedent in their experience. Passengers were not compensated for spilled drinks, etc. The ship's promenade had to be closed several hours due to broken glass.[11][12]

On August 29, 2016 at approximately 6:15 pm PT while sailing to Victoria, British Columbia, the turning valve in one of the ship's four engines failed, causing the ship to make a hard Port side turn and listed to the port side. Captain Giuseppe Gazzano had manually controlled the ship towards Victoria as safety precaution. There were no reported serious injuries but the ship arrived at Victoria two hours behind schedule.

Engine room overheating

On August 3, 2005, around 22:00, heavy smoke was seen coming from the lower levels towards the bow of the ship. In minutes, there was an announcement for everyone to proceed to the upper, open decks. The cruise director announced, "there was a problem in the engine room and that something had overheated". People had to stay put for over an hour. No real explanation or compensation was given.[12]

Passenger death

During the May 20, 2006 cruise, Ramesh Krishnamurthy, age 35, from Plumstead, Pennsylvania, was presumed dead after jumping off the Carnival Legend at 1 am on Saturday, May 27, 2006. He was reported jumping out of his balcony room after an argument with his wife in front of his children, 450 miles northeast of Florida. Foul play is not suspected, and he was believed to have been under the influence. The ship remained in the vicinity for eleven hours, delaying the Legend's arrival back to New York City the following day until 8 pm. Coast Guard officials were sent out to aid in the search, but he was never found.[13]

Collision with Enchantment of the Seas

On September 30, 2009, as Carnival Legend was leaving the berth in Cozumel, heavy winds pushed the ship against the side of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines' Enchantment of the Seas. Carnival Legend sustained damage to her open deck areas, as well as broken glass. Both ships were able to leave for their next scheduled port after being cleared by port authorities.[14]

Mechanical issue

On February 13, 2010, Carnival Legend had to reduce speed and limp home due to a mechanical problem that drastically reduced the ship's speed. Passengers reported hearing grinding noises and vibrations coming from the engine room. The ship made it back to its home port of Tampa several hours late. The next voyage resulted in a late departure and a schedule change of Cozumel instead of Grand Cayman.[15]

Azipod failure

On March 13, 2013, a technical issue with one of the ship’s Azipods affected the ship's sailing speed. As a result, Carnival Legend failed to reach her next scheduled port call in Belize City, Belize. She instead stopped in Costa Maya, Mexico, then proceeded to her next scheduled port call in Roatan, Honduras on March 14, 2013. Her visit to Grand Cayman scheduled for March 15, 2013 was cancelled shortly after the ship departed from Roatan. Passengers were notified that this stop would need to be cancelled in order to allow the ship to return to her home port of Tampa by March 17, 2013, and actually arrived back in Tampa 8 hours earlier than scheduled. Carnival Legend technical issues have not yet been resolved and this has affected the itineraries of the subsequent sailings on March 17, 2013 and March 24, 2013. The U.S. Coast Guard has announced an investigation of the incident.[16]

Listing Incident

On Monday, August 29, 2016, as the Carnival Legend approached Victoria, British Columbia, a technical issue caused the ship to list to the port side. There were no damages, and the pool emptied. However, the ship was quickly righted, with nobody injured. [17]
