1946–47 Dumbarton F.C. season

Season 1946–47 was the 70th Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the 41st time and the Scottish Cup for the 52nd time. In addition, following on from the successful format of the Southern League Cup during the war, the inaugural Scottish League Cup was played for, which Dumbarton entered.

Overview

Scottish football returned to normal after an absence of seven seasons. Dumbarton played in Division B and finished a disappointing 13th out of 14 with 18 points - 27 behind champions Dundee.

The return of the Scottish Cup, however, brought some much neaded cheer, and after dispatching A Division opponents St Mirren and Third Lanark, Dumbarton lost out narrowly to Hibernian in the fourth round.

The inaugural League Cup saw Dumbarton fail to progress from their section, finishing 3rd of 4 with just 2 wins from 6 games.

The Supplementary Cup continued, but Dumbarton fell at the first hurdle to Alloa.

There was a similar story in the Stirlingshire Cup, with East Stirling being the victors after a drawn match.

Finally two 'friendly' matches were arranged. One against A Division Partick Thistle and the other against a team of Polish internationalists, billed as a Polish Army XI who were touring post-war Europe.

Note that William Guthrie took over as manager on 20 August 1946, replacing Jackie Milne.
