Y NOT Studios is a film production and distribution company involved in South Indian films in India. It was established in 2010 by S. Sashikanth, who had previously dabbled in direction while assisting Shankar during the making of Mudhalvan.[1]

Career

In 2010, the production house made two critically acclaimed films, the spoof Thamizh Padam and the comedy drama Va, both featuring Shiva in the lead role. The former won commercial acclaim too and featured amongst the top ten grossers of that year. In 2012, the studio produced Balaji Mohan's Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi, which was also simultaneously made in Telugu as Love Failure, and the film opened to critical and commercial acclaim.[2] After also producing Balaji's next bilingual project, the successful comedy Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014), their subsequent release was the historical drama film Vasanthabalan's Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014). Featuring Siddharth and Prithviraj in the lead roles and with music composed by A. R. Rahman, it became Y NOT Studios's biggest production till date. Despite opening to positive reviews and winning critical acclaim, it performed poorly at the box office, with trade pundits blaming the time of release.[3]

In 2015, despite the relative failure of Kaaviya Thalaivan, Sashikanth revealed that Y NOT Studios would continue work on bigger ventures. He produced the Tamil-Hindi bilingual sports drama Irudhi Suttru with R. Madhavan in the lead role alongside another producer C. V. Kumar. Irudhi Suttru featured the tale of an anti-establishment boxing coach with a lot of anger against the system that let him down, finally redeeming himself by training a girl who goes on to be a world champion. The film also marked his first Hindi film, with leading director Rajkumar Hirani, also joining the film as a creative producer and expanding the film's brand value.[3] Moreover, he has announced further projects including Test, a sports thriller directed by Sashikanth himself and Pushkar-Gayathri's police thriller Vikram-Veda featuring Vijay Sethupathi. He is also working on Hindi remakes of Aaranya Kaandam and Kalyana Samayal Saadham with Imran Khan in the lead role, as well as Thiagarajan Kumararaja's next Hindi film.[3]
