Windy Boats
About WINDY Windy Boats AS and Windy Scandinavia AB are sister companies and wholly owned subsidiaries of Periscopus AS, Oslo, Norway – a privately owned holding company with interests which include publishing, media, hotels and property. The renowned WINDY boats are built at modern and well equipped production facilities in Västervik at the east coast of Sweden and in Ostroda, Poland. Windy engage about 100 skilled people producing models ranging from 26 to 53 feet in the WINDY range; and from 22 to 27 feet in the DRACO range.
Maritime Tradition All models are hand-built by skilled craftsmen. The fine woodwork and exclusive textiles are important distinguishing features of a WINDY in just the same way as the modern technology involved in the construction materials, and the control and propulsion systems. Pride in craftsmanship is something that has been handed down through centuries of Norwegian boat building. Today WINDY are honoring these traditions and heritage from locations outside Norway, yet in areas with long maritime history and proficient craftsmen.
The Founder WINDY was established in 1966 by Hugo Vold. His father was a fisherman, and his family had many anxious moments as storms raged in the Skagerrak Channel. All his father’s boats were called ‘Vindy’, and he brought every one of them safely back to port. Hugo Vold, with his deep respect for the sea and the weather, became a boat builder who wanted his vessels to be known for their seaworthiness and high quality. He called his boats ‘Windy’ in honor of his father’s trusty fishing boats.
WINDY Yacht Projects In addition to the more classical “white” range of boats WINDY have also delivered “customized” production boats as tenders to the yacht industry, but only when WINDY were contracted to develop, build and deliver the WINDY Dubois SR52 Blackbird, did they realize how perfect the skills and state of mind matched the demands of Yacht Owners. With the success of SR52 Blackbird, WINDY have established a separate Business Unit; – WINDY Yacht Projects. It has been incredibly encouraging how the yacht industry has embraced their new presence in this arena. The objective is to offer the unique WINDY Qualities to the yachting industry in cooperation with some of the very best yacht designers and naval architects in the world. Custom tenders, tender limousines, chase boats in sizes from 7 meters to 24 meters can efficiently and competitively be developed and built at the first class production facilities in Västervik, Sweden.
Development When established in 1966, a fine leisure boat was created first and foremost thanks to the skilled craftsmanship that had been handed down through the generations. It is still the case today that the craftsman has the greatest influence on the finished product, however, dialogue with the market inspires the creativity in different directions, involving new ideas and an alternative way of thinking. Today WINDY is also working closely with the most recognized and awarded yacht designers and naval architects in the world.
