Day Break is a television program for which one 13-episode season was produced. The series starred Taye Diggs as Detective Brett Hopper, who is framed for the murder of Assistant District Attorney Alberto Garza. Due to a time loop, Hopper lives the same day over and over. The series revolves around his attempt to solve the mystery of the murder, and find out who is behind the conspiracy to frame him.
The series aired on the ABC network, and premiered on November 15, 2006. Rapidly declining ratings led to the show being cancelled on December 15 after only six episodes had aired.[1] The remaining episodes were subsequently made available online at ABC.com. Viewers for the show averaged 6.5 million.[2]
On March 16, 2008, the TV One cable network began airing the six previously broadcast episodes.[3] On April 20, the network began Sunday evening broadcasts of the remaining seven episodes, which had never been seen on television.[4]
Synopsis
Los Angeles Detective Brett Hopper is stuck repeating the same day, in which he is framed for the murder of the Assistant District Attorney, Alberto Garza. Each day, he attempts to uncover clues to the homicide that has him on the run for his freedom. Hopper must clear his name, but those close to him get caught in the web of conspiracy that will put their lives in danger.
The days can get complicated with each decision he makes as he tries various tactics to fight or flee the murder allegations. At least one other individual seems to be repeating the same day as Hopper, but his actions rarely affect Hopper's case unless they happen to be working together on that iteration of the day.
While episodes may start at any time of the day and may contain multiple days or parts of days, Hopper begins each day by waking up at 6:17 a.m. and viewing his clock turn to 6:18 a.m.[5] Hopper only carries his memories and his body, with any injuries, over into the next repetition of the day. However, injuries to other individuals do not carry over to the next day.
If Hopper makes enough of a difference in one situation, related events are sometimes altered. He also sometimes has flashbacks from before the repeating day.
This generally involves an individual waking up with a sense of apprehension or a newfound perspective concerning the object or relationship that Hopper affected in a previous iteration of the day. These changes can be reversed, as in the cases of Andrea deciding to check her boyfriend into a drug rehabilitation center and Rita's feelings towards Hopper in episodes 11, 12 and 13.

Broadcast
All 13 episodes were made available on ABC.com. However, the online videos are no longer on ABC.com as of October, 2007. As of August 15, 2009, all 13 episodes are on Hulu.com. As of April 19, 2011, the series is also available for instant streaming to Netflix subscribers. Repeats of the series now air on the TV One cable network, to be followed by those episodes which were not televised on ABC.
In Ireland the national broadcaster is airing Day Break at 4am on Saturday mornings on its second channel RTÉ 2.
In Brazil the People&Arts channel is broadcasting the episodes.
Online distribution
ABC had previously said that there were problems that kept the rest of the episodes from being shown online, calling them "unforeseen music clearance issues."[15] On January 14, 2007, the network announced that the remaining episodes would be made available by the end of February.[16] The first six episodes which had aired on television were posted on January 29, 2007, along with the first four unaired episodes.[17]
The thirteenth and final episode, which was originally scheduled to be available on February 19, was delayed multiple times. After a nearly three-week wait, the finale premiered late on March 2. It was reported that the reasons for this delay concerned copyrighting issues with some of the original soundtrack from the final cut of the episode.[18]
DVD releases
On March 25, 2008, Day Break: The Complete Series was released on DVD in Region 1 by BCI Eclipse on a 4-disc set.[19] This release is out of print as BCI Eclipse ceased operations in December 2008.[20]
In June 2009, Mill Creek Entertainment acquired the rights to Day Break and subsequently re-released Day Break: The Complete Series on September 29, 2009, as a 2-disc set.[21]
