Wade Edward Philpott

Wade Edward Philpott (1918–1985) was an American mathematician and puzzle maker. Several of his puzzles have gone on to become best sellers.[1]

Life

He was born in Sunnyside, Washington in 1918. His biological parents were Chester E. Edwards and Mary Ream Edwards.[2]

In 1921, he was adopted by his aunt, Viola Ream Philpott and uncle, George Austin Philpott. As a result of that his name was changed from Chester Wade Edwards to Wade Edward Philpott.[3]

He got married to Myra Given in 1941.[4]

He died in 1985.

Career

He graduated from Ohio Northern University with a degree in Engineering.[5]

In 1947, a shooting accident left him paralyzed. During his long hospitalization, he developed an interest in recreational mathematics and puzzles.[6]

He published several of his works in the Journal of Recreational Mathematics.[7]

Puzzles

He produced several puzzles during his lifetime. Two of his best known puzzles are Multimatch and Sweep.[8]

His games and puzzles were sold by Kadon Enterprises, Inc.[9]
