Winston William Wharton was the first head college football coach for the Drake University Bulldogs located in Des Moines, Iowa and he held that position for the 1894 season. His overall coaching record at Drake was 2 wins, 2 losses, and 0 ties. This ranks him 21st at Drake in terms of total wins and 13th at Drake in terms of winning percentage.[2] He was a man of many talents, including baton twirling. At a church service in Tingley, Iowa a young Dan McGugin was intrigued. Wharton suggested he play football.[3]
