The United States national ice sledge hockey team is the ice sledge hockey team representing the United States. The team is overseen by USA Hockey, a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation, and participates in international competitions.

History

Paralympics

At the 1998, the US team had a seventh-place finish. The highlight of the Games for the team was Joe Howard, who set a record with six goals in one match.[1] The first gold medal won by the United States in Paralympic hcokey came on home soil at the 2002 Paralympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Of note, the US defeated the defending gold medal champion Norwegian squad by a 4-3 tally in the shootout. The United States finished with a 6-0mark, while outscoring opponents 26-6 in the tournament. Joe Howard earned MVP honors for the 2002 Gold Medal game, registering three goals and adding one assist.

Participating in Ice sledge hockey at the 2010 Winter Paralympics, the United States shutout Japan by a 2-0 count. In the gold medal game for Ice sledge hockey at the 2014 Winter Paralympics, the United States beat Russia by a 1-0 tally to claim the gold.[2]

IPC World Championships

A fifth-place finish at the 1996 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships was followed by the United States finishing in sixth place at the 2000 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships. Of note, the United States served as the host country for the event. Held between March 20, 2000 and March 25, 2000, matches were contested at the E Center in West Valley City, Utah, United States.

In 2008, the United States would serve as host country for the 4th IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships. The event was held between March 29, 2008 and April 5, 2008 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, United States, at the New England Sports Center. Organized by Massachusetts Hockey in co-operation with US Paralympics, around 200 athletes from ten countries participated in the 10-team round robin tournament which featured two divisions: six teams in group A and four teams in group B.

The United States hosted, and won, the 2015 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Championships, held at the newly constructed HarborCenter in Buffalo, New York.
