Toni Rembe
Toni Rembe is an American lawyer who in 1971 became one of the first women to be named a partner at a major law firm in California.
Biography
Rembe studied at the University of Geneva in Switzerland and the University of Washington as an undergraduate and earned her juris doctor degree at the University of Washington School of Law.[1][2] Rembe was one of only four women in her law school graduating class.[3] In 1961, after receiving a graduate degree in taxation at New York University School of Law, Rembe joined the firm of Chadbourne, Parke, Whiteside & Wolff (later Chadbourne & Parke) in New York City.[2] In 1964, she moved to San Francisco and became an associate at Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, specializing international law and federal and state taxation.[2]
In 1971, she became the first female partner in the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, the predecessor to Pillsbury Winthrop LLP,[4] San Francisco, California. She remained with the firm until her retirement in December 2004. Rembe was elected a Director of AT&T Inc. in January 1998 and had previously served as an Advisory Director of AT&T Inc. from April 1997 to January 1998. She retired from the board in 2008.[5] She served as a Director of Pacific Telesis Group from 1991 until the company was acquired by SBC Communications in 1997. Rembe is also a Director of AEGON N.V.
Personal life
Rembe is married to venture capitalist Arthur Rock.[4][6]
Rembe recounted that she received two offers of employment upon graduation from law school, one from Chadbourne and the other from the Paul Weiss law firm. When Paul Weiss extended its offer, the firm informed Rembe that she would not be discriminated against for being a Gentile. Rembe initially thought that the firm was joking, but learned that she would have been the first Gentile attorney in the all-Jewish law firm.[3]
