The Golden Electric Tour was a scheduled music concert tour of Australia and New Zealand headlined by American R&B/soul singer Janelle Monáe and the New Zealand electropop singer Kimbra that was cancelled on May 21, 2014.[1][2]
Conception
Janelle Monáe and Kimbra bonded over a mutual love of Prince at the 2013 Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, which turned into a spontaneous jam session that same night. A collaborative tour was soon suggested; both will play their own sets with their respective bands, as well as perform together.[3]
In support of the tour, the dynamic duo released a joint music video of them performing a mash-up of Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" and Michael Jackson's Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'.[4]
Cancellation
"Ms. Monáe is devastated at not being able to perform for her fans and has vowed to return to our shores in the not-too-distant future ... Janelle Monáe, Kimbra and Live Nation apologize for the disappointment to fans and ticketholders
—Live Nation press release[2]
In May 2014, Monáe fell ill and was forced to cancel the May 16th concert at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Australia as she was being hospitalized. Shortly after, the May 17th and the May 19th shows were postponed and cancelled, respectively.[5] The tour was officially cancelled altogether on May 20, 2014 on account of Monáe being unable to perform in her condition. While there is still no clarification of Monae's illness or condition, Kimbra assured the fans that they would be back in the future with revived tour dates.[6]
