Tate family
The Tate family are a fictional family on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale.
About the Tates
The Tate family were introduced in 1989, at the same time that 'Farm' was dropped from Emmerdale's title, and were part of a more glamorous, Dallas-style feel to the soap. The Tates were one of two major families introduced into the show in 1989, the other being the less-profiled family the Whiteleys. Another major family, The Hughes family, were introduced a year earlier.
Self-made millionaire Frank and his second wife, Kim, retired to the country as Frank handed over the reins of his haulage business to his son, Chris. However Frank was so bored of retirement and returned to help run the business, much to Chris's annoyance. Daughter Zoe, meanwhile, was at university studying to be a vet, and later set up her own practice.
The Tates emerged as the leading family of the 1990s, and were involved in some of the show's most dramatic storylines. Frank became an alcoholic and died of a heart attack in front of Kim. Kim became a "superbitch" and faked her own death before returning only to finally leave in 1999. Chris lost the use of his legs in the Beckindale plane crash and eventually killed himself, framing his wife for murder. Zoe came out as a lesbian in the early 90s and went on to develop schizophrenia. In 2005, Zoe left the village with her daughter Jean and nephew Joseph. As a parting gift to the Kings, she blew up Home Farm, which she had been blackmailed into selling to the Kings.
In October 2009, Charity Tate returned with her son, Noah Tate, who is the son of Chris Tate, bringing the Tate name back to Emmerdale. In 2012, Charity marries Jai Sharma and he adopts Noah, with his name being changed to Sharma. In 2013 when Charity leaves Jai after finding out about his secret son Archie who was conceived in a one night stand with Rachel Breckle, she has her and Noah's last names changed legally back to Tate, once again returning the Tate name to Emmerdale.
