Taivalkoski is a municipality of Finland, it is located in the Province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region.
The municipality has a population of 4,187 (31 March 2016)[2] and covers an area of 2,650.63 square kilometres (1,023.41 sq mi) of which 212.59 km2 (82.08 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 1.72 inhabitants per square kilometre (4.5/sq mi).
The municipality is unilingually Finnish. Neighbour municipalities are Kuusamo, Posio, Pudasjärvi and Suomussalmi.
Taivalkoski was the home of famous writer Kalle Päätalo and TV-comedian Pekka Jalava. Also world champion ski jumper Tapio Räisänen and ice hockey-player Joni Pitkänen were born in Taivalkoski.
The Iijoki river runs through the centre of the village.
