Susana Beatriz Olarte (11 November 1946 Rosario) is an Argentina athlete, who is known for being one of the top Paralympic medalists that country, Latin America and Spanish-speaking countries. Olarte won nine medals, including four gold, at the 1964 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, and 1968 Paralympic Games Tel Aviv, in field athletics and wheelchair basketball. In Tel Aviv in 1968, she also won three world records in shot put launches (6.06 m), discus (17.01 m) and hammer throw (29.30 m). Olarte also won gold medal in shot put at the second Pan American Games for Paralympians held in Buenos Aires in 1962.
Life
Susana Olarte contracted polio at age five. At twelve she earned the title of professor of piano and music theory. She worked as a clerk in the Municipality of Rosario, where she retired. In 2014, the Municipality of Rosario included his name on one of the plates placed in the Paseo de los Olímpicos.[1]
For its sporting achievements was recognized in Argentina as Master of Sports.[2]
Career
In the 1964 Tokyo Paralympics, Susana Olarte won four medals in athletics, one gold, two silver and one bronze.
In the 1968 Paralympics in Tel Aviv, Susana Olarte won five medals in athletics and wheelchair basketball: 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. She also broke three world records in the three events he won gold medals.
She joined in the women's basketball wheelchair event at the Tel Aviv Games. They involved five countries: Argentina, Austria, United States, Great Britain and Israel. The Argentine team was composed of Silvia Cochetti, Estela Fernandez, Dina Galindez, Susana Masciotra, Amelia Mier, Susana Olarte and Naomi Tortul.[3]
The Argentine team beat the United States 4-1 to Austria 22-15, Britain lost to Israel 8-2 and 17-12, this team won every game by winning the gold medal, while Argentina was second becoming won her the silver medal, while the bronze corresponded to US.[4]
Olarte participated in the Parapan Games held in Buenos Aires in 1969, obtaining four gold medals in shooting bullet, discus and javelin and wheelchair basketball. She also attended the IWAS World Games, earning a gold medal in discus, and basketball in 1966. In the Parapan American Games at Lima in 1973, she won three gold medals and one bronze in the same specialties. In 1992, he participated in the Pan American Games in Caracas obtaining special mention hammer throw and discus.[5]
