Suraya Mosque (Spanish: Mezquita Suraya) is the first mosque founded in Mexico, located in Torreon, Coahuila, and established in 1989.[1] Most of its attendees belong to the Shia branch of Islam.[2]

History

Since the early twentieth century the presence of immigrants from the Middle East is recorded in and around Torreón dedicated primarily to trade. However, it was not until 1983 that approximately 35 people, descendants of the first immigrants, began meeting in the house of Hassan Zain Chamut, who later became the leader of the community.[3]

Elias Serhan Selim, one of the participants in those meetings, had the idea of build a mosque. Construction began in 1986 and ended in 1989, Selim Serhan it was one of the main sponsors of the project, which was led by Zain Chamut, an architect by profession.[2]
