St John of God Hospital Burwood

St John of God Hospital Burwood is a division of St John of God Health Care, one of the largest providers of health care services in Australia.[1]

Founded in 1958, the private psychiatric hospital provides mental health care on an inpatient, day patient and outpatient basis.

The hospital is located in Sydney’s inner-west. In addition to the main building, the Burwood hospital operates specialised medical consulting rooms at the adjacent Medical Centre, as well as a Counselling and Therapy Centre located in the hospital grounds.[2]

In 1997, the hospital was awarded the “Baxter/APHA Award for Quality and Excellence (under 100 beds)”.[3]

Services

St John of God Hospital Burwood offers a number of services for people suffering from mental health issues, including:

Research

In 2009, the Perinatal and Women’s Mental Health Unit was established through a partnership with St John of God Health Care and the University of New South Wales.[4]

Based at the Burwood hospital and led by Professor Marie-Paule Austin, the unit is the first of its kind in Australia to combine both pre-natal and women’s mental health.[5]

Professor Austin and her team will conduct research into anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and other emotional health issues experienced by mothers during pregnancy and after birth.[6]

Casa Venegas

St John of God Hospital Burwood operates Casa Venegas, an outreach service for homeless people with mental health problems. St John of God Casa Venegas provides home-style accommodation on a medium to long-term basis, in west and inner city.

The “Casa Venegas” name comes from a story about the hospital’s patron saint, St John of God. In the 16th century, John of God ministered to the sick in Granada, Spain; at night, he invited the poor and weak to shelter with him in a vestibule at the home of wealthy citizen Don Miguel. The house was named “Casa Venegas”.[7]
