Summer Olympics appearances (overview) | |||||||||
Sri Lanka competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's sixteenth appearance at the Olympics, except the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. Six of its games were designated as Ceylon.
The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka sent a total of seven athletes to the Games, four men and three women, to compete in four sports.[2] Three Sri Lankan athletes received their spots in track and field and swimming by wild card entries (both swimmers and Merill). Other Sri Lankan athletes won their spots by participating in various qualifying matches around the world. Badminton player Niluka Karunaratne became the nation's first male flag bearer at the opening ceremony since 1992.
Sri Lanka, however, failed to win a single Olympic medal at these games since the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where Susanthika Jayasinghe won silver for the sprint.
Athletics
Sri Lankan athletes have so far achieved qualifying standards in the following athletics events (up to a maximum of 3 athletes in each event at the 'A' Standard, and 1 at the 'B' Standard):[3][4] Sri Lanka did not qualify for women's athlete events and, therefore, was able to select one wildcard entrant.[5]
