Soman Ambaat (also spelled Soman Ambatt or referred as just Soman)[2] is a notable director (Member of FEFKA) in Malayalam cinema. His debut film was Aayiram Abhilashangal (1984).[3] This was followed by several notable films in Malayalam like Manasariyathe (1984), Oppom Oppathinoppum (1986),[4] and Agnimuhurtham (1987).[5] He has also worked as Chief Associate director for movies like Jagadguru Adisankaran (1977), Shrimad Bhagwadgeeta (1977), Ashtamangalyam (1977), Harshabhaspam (1977), Pichipoo (1978, Manoradham (1978), Vilakkum veilchavum (1978), Aanakkalari (1978), Kolillakam (1981), and Ponnum Poovum (1982).
Personal life
Soman Ambaat is married to Latha, daughter of film editor K Sankunni.[6] He has one daughter Deepika Soman married to Rateesh Ramachandran and one son Abishek Soman.
Career
Born in Edappally, Kochi, Soman Ambaat completed his graduation from Bharat Mata college in Kochi. He left is banking profession to join film industry. Started his career as Assistant Director to P. Bhaskaran. Later on he worked as Associate Director for various films with eminent directors like A. Vincent, P. N. Sundaram, P Gopikumar, Vijayanand and A B Raj. His first independent venture was Aayiram Abhilashangal in 1984, which was a suspense thriller with a varied film treatment. This movie starred Mammotty, Sukumaran, Soman, Maneka and Swapna in lead roles.[7] The movie also was multi starer with all prominent actors of that era. The movie was received well with the audience for its different approach. Followed by a notable movie, Manasariyathe (1984)[8][9] starring Mohanlal, Zarina Wahab, Nedumudi Venu, Sattar and Jagathy. Mohanlal starrer megahit Malayalam movie Drishyam (2013) movie had similar story line to the movie Manasariyathe. In 1986, he directed the mega hit movie Oppom Oppathinoppum starring Mohanlal, Menaka, Shankar and Lalu alex.[10] In 1987 he directed a family drama Agnimuhurtam[11] with Rateesh and Urvashi. His movie Ennum Maarodanaykkan[12] in 1986 was not completed since he left for UAE to pursue a different career. The movie songs were released and was well received. Apart from his hectic film making schedule he also was an avid reader and got keen interest in computer technology which was nascent at that time. This led him to develop his own virtual digital application (called Silver)for film production which was handed over to Brilliant Computers, Chennai for commercialization. He is currently based in UAE working in Dubai Airports as System Engineer and is planning a come back to Malayalam cinema and television industry.
