Smit Singh (born 18 January 1991) is an international sportsperson of Indian national shooting team.[1] He started his international sports career at age of 16 years in the discipline of skeet shooting with participation in the Asian Shooting Championships in December 2007.[2]

Career

Smit is the present National Record holder of India in skeet shooting at the score of 123 out of 125 which he established at the ISSF World Cup, Al Ain, United Arab Emirates in April 2013.[3][4] He won two gold medals at the 35th National Games, Kerala, India in February 2015.[5][6][7][8]

He won his first international gold medal at Asian Clay Shooting Championships in February 2008 (in under 21 category) and went on to win Silver and Bronze medal at the South Asian Shooting Championships in November 2008 for India's Senior National Shooting Team.[9][10] He has participated in many international sports championships including the World Shooting Championships and Asian Games.[11][12][13][14][15] He won the bronze trophy at International Junior Cup held in Orimattila, Finland, July 2011, winning for India it's first world level medal in skeet event.[16]

Personal life

Smit's interest in India's development and social complexities lead him to travel across rural and tribal belts of India interning with social movements and volunteering with NGOs.[17] He is currently studying for a Masters Degree in Contemporary South Asian Studies Programme at Somerville College, University of Oxford.[18] Smit's father Dhanwant Singh is a General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.[19] Dhanwant Singh was elected Member of Punjab Legislative Assembly (MLA) twice 1992 - 1997 and 1997 - 2002, is known for his honesty and work in the region.[20]
