Silent Hill HD Collection is a compilation of remastered ports of Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Features

Since Konami lost source code for both games, Hijinx Studios had to work with unfinished versions of Silent Hill 2 and 3.[1] The core play mechanics and story for all games remained mostly the same with some artistic changes in the remastered versions. For the remastering, both games have had a graphics overhaul to allow them to support modern 720p resolution on consoles, as well as run at locked 30 frames per second. Both games also feature an alternate voice dub, as well as PlayStation Network Trophies and Xbox 360 Achievements. Players have the option to switch between the original voice acting and the alternate voice acting for Silent Hill 2, while the re-dub is mandatory for Silent Hill 3 because it lacks the original voice acting.

Reception

Silent Hill HD Collection received an average score of 70/100 from Metacritic for the PlayStation 3 release[2] and 69/100 for the Xbox 360 release, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[3] According to Play, "Technically the collection is lacking, but there's no denying the quality of the games."[2] The Official PlayStation Magazine stated: "As an exercise in Playstation fear, it doesn't come any purer than this."[2] Conversely, GameTrailers expressed disappointment with the collection, writing: "The inconsistent presentation, compromises to the original developer’s vision, and lack of any interesting bonus features make this compilation’s $40 price even more unnerving than its games."[4] The new voice acting drew a range of reactions, from praise as a general improvement over the originals,[5][6][7] to mixed results.[8][9][10] Several reviewers commented on the absence of other Silent Hill games, such as Silent Hill 4: The Room and Silent Hill: Origins.[7][8][10] Glitches[11] and issues with the lip-synching were also noted.[4][9][10]

The collection is almost universally shunned by Silent Hill fans in favor of the original PS2 versions given the various audio and graphical details that were not maintained in the transition to HD, the most notable instance being the intense desaturation of the fog effects in Silent Hill 2.
