The Shanghai Rego International School (simplified Chinese: 上海瑞金国际学校; traditional Chinese: 上海瑞金國際學校; pinyin: Shànghǎi Ruìjīn Guójì Xuéxiào[1]) is a private international school located in Minhang District, Shanghai, China. The school operates on the National Curriculum (UK), delivers the IB-Diploma Program to 16- to 18-year-olds and provides a learning environment for expatriate children aged 2–18. The school delivers the English National Curriculum from Nursery to Key Stage 5 (ages 2–18) which includes the ICGSE and A Level Programme.

To accommodate non-native English speakers and to facilitate the transfer back to the home country, the school offers a fully integrated Mother Tongue Programme in Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Chinese.

Location

The school is located in Minhang District, Shanghai. It is located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from the Shanghai Zoo Hongqiao, 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from Xujiahui, 17 kilometres (11 mi) from Zhongshan Park, 19 kilometres (12 mi) from Xintiandi, 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Jing'an Temple, and 23 kilometres (14 mi) from Lujiazui.[2]

Specialties

An extensive Mother Tongue Program including: Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Chinese. There are also many Extra-curricular activities, Sport Clubs, Art, Drama and Music. There is also EAL for students with English as their secondary language.

Sports teams

Rego used to have many competitive sports teams, including rugby, football, swimming, netball, basketball and volleyball. The school does not have sufficient student numbers to field teams now.

Controversy

In 2012 it was announced that the school had been struggling to obtain the proper permits and authorizations from the local Chinese government. The owner of the school stated publicly that the teachers had been working in Shanghai with tourist visas for at least 6 months. Tourist visas only allow visitors to stay for 30 days and it is illegal to work in China while visiting with a tourist visa.[3] He also admitted there were "difficulties" paying the teachers on a regular schedule. The administration declined to provide details on what exactly these difficulties were. Now school is closed due to unpaid staff, teachers, bus company, catering, cleaning service and guards.[4]

The government has stated that when the schools land-lease expires in 2013 that the it will not be eligible for renewal. This decision was made to satisfy the growing needs of the city, allowing Shanghai to create a new public school[5]

The pay dispute crisis continued into 2014. February of that year it had over 40 students remaining.[6]
