SexArt (stylized as SexArt, or Sex Art) was an American alternative metal band that formed in 1989.[1]

SexArt - Band

Career

SexArt formed in 1989 in Bakersfield, California, founded by Dennis Shinn. They are best known for being the band that Jonathan Davis was in, before he became the singer for Korn[2] in 1993. As SexArt, the music group line-up; Jonathan Davis vocalist / singer, David DeRoo played bass, Dennis Shinn played drums, Ray Solis, and Ryan Shuck played guitar.[3] Ty Elam (singer from Videodrone, also known as the band Cradle of Thorns) appeared as a guest vocalist, sharing vocal duties on the only released SexArt track, "Inside", which featured on the Bakersfield Ca. compilation cd Cultivation '92[4] on the indie label "A Kick Produkt". SexArt performed shows often, and throughout the course of two (2) years. SexArt participated in both the 1993 Kern County, and Fresno County "Battle Of The Bands" contests, and won them both. The band recorded six (6) songs total, over the course of three (3) recording sessions from 1992, and 1993. The recordings were produced inside the Rick Davis recording studio "Fat Tracks" - Bakersfield Ca. The songs chosen to be recorded; 1: Blind,[5] 2: Follow Me, 3: I Wanna Know Why, 4: Give Up, 5: Waste My Time, and 6: Inside. Jonathan Davis[6] left the band in early 1993. Following Davis's departure, Richard Morrill auditioned, and became the new singer for SexArt. Richard Morrill previously sang for Bakersfield music group L.A.P.D.. (whom later became the band Korn, having Jonathan Davis as their new singer). The SexArt (band), along with Richard Morrill, relocated from Bakersfield, to Los Angeles, Ca. Where they changed the group name to SuperModel.

SuperModel

Formed late 1993, SuperModel (previously named SexArt) joined with ex-singer L.A.P.D. member, Richard Morrill, and moved from Bakersfield Ca. to Los Angeles, Ca. After a year, on the later side of 1994, the band relocated to Huntington Beach Ca.. The band maintained a steady live performance all around Southern Ca. until they broke up in early 1996. SuperModel had seven (7) songs. None of which were released, nor professionally recorded.

Post-SexArt / SuperModel

After leaving SexArt, Jonathan Davis continued to build his music career while singing for the music group Korn.[2] Today, as he remains the singer for Korn, Davis has managed to reach the highest levels of success. Following Metallica's footsteps, Korn has become one of the biggest metal groups of all time, as they have cleared more than 50 Million sales WorldWide. Davis, and his band Korn are currently in line to be a future inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Korn remain active. In 1996, following the ending of "SuperModel", Dennis Shinn[7] met Jay Gordon, and Jay Baumgardner, securing the production team to produce debut LP for the band Coal Chamber. From there, Dennis Shinn[8] teamed up with Jay Gordon to start a new band. Dennis Shinn - (drums), Ryan Shuck - (guitar), and Jay Gordon - (bass and vocals), becoming the early stages of the music group Orgy. Later, Dennis Shinn[7] departed from the group to focus on music production. Ryan Shuck remained in the band, and Orgy, were signed onto the Elementree label shortly after Shinn's departure. In 1998, Orgy released their debut album "Candyass", RIAA Certified Platinum, selling almost two (2) million copies worldwide. Ryan Shuck later departed from Orgy, to start Julien-K. Shuck also made one (1) album with Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington, titled Dead By Sunrise. Julien-K remain active. Following the SuperModel band breakup In 1996, David DeRoo and Ray Solis returned to Bakersfield and made a new band titled: "Juice". Juice recorded a few demo's and played shows extensively. Juice disbanded in 1999 due to creative differences. Following the break up of Juice, David DeRoo along with bandmate Tim Fluckey joined Mark Chavez (Jonathan Davis' half brother) in Adema. In 2001, Adema released their self-titled debut LP. Peaking at number 27 on the Billboard Top 200. Adema became RIAA certified Gold in the US and sold over 1 million copies worldwide. Adema remain active. In 1997 following drum duties, his early departure from Orgy, Dennis Shinn[9] carried out his passion for producing music. As a producer, Shinn helped develop new acts, while shopping them to record labels. Shinn also formed a post-punk music group called "The Drug", in which Shinn was the lead singer, and adopted the nickname "Menace". Moving with the times, Shinn gravitated to electronic music, and created the DJ act called "The Anarky". The Drug was placed on hiatus, The Anarky remain active.

Band Break-Up

Rumored drug-use radical behaviors, differing personal lives and future direction of the band, is what led to the official dismantling of SexArt 1993.
Jonathan Davis' departure was said to be an extension of inner conflicts between him and Ryan Shuck.
During the years 1992-1993, the band had been gaining momentum, local buzz, crowd attendance, as well as local radio support.
About this time is also when Korn band members went to watch a show by SexArt, where they spotted Jonathan Davis singing. Davis was approached by Korn members to depart from SexArt and join in a band with them. Jonathan Davis mentioned to bandmate Dennis Shinn, that he wouldn't leave SexArt, if Ryan Shuck was kicked out of the band.
This news came to Shinn, just before SexArt had the final round "Battle of the Bands" to perform. After the show, Shinn kicked Shuck out of SexArt. Shinn went to tell Davis it was done, but it was too late. Davis had already left in a car immediately after the show, to join with Korn. Shinn had to walk back into the building and collect the "Battle of The Bands Winner" award on behalf SexArt. Minus Davis, and Shuck, Dennis Shinn, David DeRoo, and Ray Solis were present during the BOTB winner's announcement.
A few weeks later, the band all came together to do one last recording of three (3) songs.
A few months following the last SexArt studio session, the band re-joined without Davis, in search of new singer.

Controversy: Korn songs "Blind" and "Daddy"

When Jonathan Davis joined his new band, he chose to utilize songs "Blind[10]" and "Daddy[11]", to be represented by Korn, instead of allowing Sexart to maintain representation of the songs.
Both songs had been written, and recorded in the band SexArt.[12]
Following SexArt, both songs landed on Korn's first recorded demo Neidermayer's Mind1993, produced by Ross Robinson.
Following that demo, both songs again, were re-recorded for the debut (self-titled) album "Korn" 1994 on Immortal records / Epic Records.
Jonathan Davis failed to credit Dennis Shinn, and Ryan Shuck for their song writing contributions.
After the release of Korn's debut LP, Shinn, and Shuck were forced to apply a lawsuit against Jonathan Davis, and Korn, to retrieve their rightful credit as songwriters.
The case quickly settled, as song writing credits were split among the musicians. Korn has represented the songs ever since.
Dennis Shinn,[13] and Ryan Shuck are currently credited as songwriters, along with Korn, on numerous product releases that feature the songs, including Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 (Korn album).
As it stands: Both songs "Blind" and "Daddy", became the staple songs, defining the "Korn Sound" as well as being the aid to ignite the "nu metal" music rock genre.

"Follow Me"[14] - now titled "Daddy"[15] was written in SexArt as a band collaboration.
Dennis Shinn wrote the vocal melody, and lyrics, as Dave DeRoo, Ray Solis, Ryan Shuck, and Jonathan Davis collaborated on the music.
Once Korn took the song on, all the music from SexArt was replaced by Korn, as they kept the original vocals written by Dennis Shinn.
At that time, Jonathan Davis built a few more vocals pieces to finalize the song. Which then Davis renamed the song, calling it "Daddy".

"Blind", had been written entirely by Dennis Shinn,[16] - being both the music, and vocal melodies / lyrics.
Once Shinn had the song ready, he introduced the song to the other guys at band practice.
From that point, Ryan Shuck added in one (1) music section (acting as a bridge).
Shuck's bridge contribution followed the extremely popular song opening riff composed by Dennis Shinn.
The bridge divided the popular intro riff, from the vocal section of the song. The bridge came back around after the vocal section ended as well.
Shuck's contribution landed on both SexArt's 1993 recorded demo of "Blind", as well as Korn's 1993 recorded demo of "Blind".
However, once the 1994 Korn LP was being recorded, the music part written by Shuck was removed.

On the SexArt 1993 recorded demo, following Shucks 2nd bridge appearance, the song then dropped into an extensive musical (Bridge-Breakdown) that built up before the closing out of the song.
The entire section (bridge-breakdown and build-up) was musically composed by Ray Solis.
This area of music by Solis was not recorded on the 1993 Korn demo, nor the 1994 Korn album LP.

The 1994 Korn debut LP (self titled), featuring SexArt songs, "Blind and Daddy", has sold over 10 Million Copies WorldWide.
RIAA Certified 4X's Platinum.
4 Million Copies Sold in the US according to Nielsen SoundScan as of January 4, 2013.
The album is considered to have popularized the nu metal genre.

Discography

SexArt were never signed to a record label, although creating around fifteen (15) songs. Only one (1) song was ever released. Six (6) of the songs were recorded at the Rick Davis recording studio called "Fat Tracks". The others were recorded on boom box, and or 4-track recorders. The only released song by the band was entitled "Inside", which featured Ty Elam from Videodrone on vocals.[17] The song was released on the Cultivation '92 compilation CD, from the label "A Kick Produkt".[4]

The song "INSIDE", not only was the first song to be released, it was also the first song to come from SexArt, being the song that finalized them as a full band.
The song was musically created as a band collaboration before Jonathan Davis had joined to become the singer.
The vocals were later written by Dennis Shinn, during the actual recording session of the song.
During the recording session, Shinn had called in singer Ty Elam, from Cradle of Thorns, to handle the vocal duties on the song.
When asked why Davis didn't sing on the song, Shinn stated that "Jonathan wasn't ready to sing the heavier rock style we were playing. At the time, his vocal style was more geared towards soft rock".
After Elam recorded, Shinn had also written a section where Davis could sing, as it was mellow, and more up his alley at the time. The vocal duties on the last half of the song were sung by Davis, and Elam. Shinn designed overlapping melodies, as they sang every other line in complimentary to each other's vocal tones.

INSIDE - the song meaning
Having audio samples that came from the hit motion picture "New Jack City", helped paint the picture within the song itself.

When asked what the song was about, Dennis Shinn replied:

"Back in the 1992-1993 circa, I wrote a lot of lyrics that aimed towards the gang related subjects. Based from how I saw things, and what I had to encounter from time to time. Street gangs were very present in the early 1990's, in almost every city in California. From where I stood as an outsider, I never wanted to be in that life. So instead of glorifying the lifestyle in a song, I chose to share a different viewpoint, being the downside to that kind of life. The song "Inside", was based from a real story I bared witness to when I was 16 years old. It was about a guy who was initiated into a gang, by having to do a drive-by shooting. The story of how he felt afterwards, his processing, being confused, scared, alone, and ashamed of what he had done, led him to an attempt suicide. I was the person who stopped him from hurting himself. So the song was about that guys process, knowing what he had done, which was very horrific to say the least." − Dennis Shinn

Documentary Film

In 2010, SexArt founder, and drummer, Dennis Shinn[18] had video trailer made, to showcase some footage, with the hopes to make and release a documentary film based around the band. Titled: "SexArt - In The Muthafucking House[19]". The video trailer showcased fast edit bits of audio and video footage. Which allowed the viewer to have a small glimpse inside the life of SexArt, and the Bakersfield music circa 1993.

Dennis Shinn stated:

"The history needs to be preserved, and cherished. This is where we all started as young musicians. And without this moment, then we'd never have any of the great bands that came out of Sexart" − Dennis Shinn

The film would include 10 songs that land in the footage of the band rehearsing, live performances, and studio recording sessions. After consideration, Shinn decided to hold off on a 2011 release, and wait for more appropriate timing. Which he mentioned would be some point following Korn's 20th year anniversary.[20]

The songs "Follow Me[14] - (now titled Daddy[11]), and Blind", represented by Korn, was originally written by SexArt.

The music video was featured in an episode of Beavis and Butt-head, where the duo comment on the video's lack of originality, however they commented that the song sounded "kinda cool".
The song itself was used as the ending theme for the U.S. releases of Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
X-Games Vol.1[22] compilation cd, as well as the opening song to launch the official XGames live on TV.

Korn Album Demo "Neidermeyer's Mind"

Songs "Blind and Daddy" had been re-recorded by Korn, to be featured on the band's demo tape entitled Neidermeyer's Mind, released in 1993.
There is a slight difference between the three (3) song versions (SexArt demo's, Korn demo's and then Korn debut LP).
SexArt's demo version lent more towards the Grunge genre, having slight hints of heavy metal and nu metal applied.
1993 Korn demo, aimed more towards the heavy-metal atmosphere, having a better produced demo above SexArt's version.
And the final version that appeared on Korn's debut LP brought the final produced elements, being more polished.

Music video

"Blind", was chosen to become the very first song single to promote the debut album by the rock group Korn. The music video of "Blind", was directed by Joseph McGinty Nichol. Korn is seen performing in front of an energetic crowd in a small stage room. A large "Korn" flag can be seen on the back of the stage. There are also clips of the band hanging out. The video was released, and debuted on MTV in January 1995.

Live performance / SexArt & Korn

Songs "Blind" and Follow Me", had been performed by Sexart multiple times (club venues - live shows), before Jonathan Davis joined up to sing for Korn.
From that point; the song "Follow Me" had been renamed to "Daddy", after taking on a new musical approach created by Korn.
Both "Blind" and "Daddy" were then being performed by Korn, throughout their career before signing their first record deal with a major label.
After Korn was signed, and released their debut LP in 1994, the song "Blind" has been used as their concert opener, or show closer, for the entire 20+ years of their career as Korn.

"Blind", is well known for its intense opening guitar riff, as Jonathan Davis yells "Are Your Ready".
It's been known that the performances of "Blind" lends the greatest impact, crowd reaction, and energy, throughout the entire live performance set.
The song was chosen as the fan favorite, as well as being placed 1st in category on the historical "Woodstock 99 (album)" concert festival cd, and DVD video.
After departing from Korn in 2005, guitarist Brian "Head" Welch had also covered the song live.

It was performed live at the Carolina Rebellion in Rockingham, North Carolina; Davis invited Brian "Head" Welch to join Korn on stage and perform the song. This was Welch's first performance with Korn since his departure.[23] Since then, Welch had rejoined Korn.
Recently, at shows such as the Download Festival, the song has opened the show as a new mix, with a much shorter intro.
In the later side of 2015, the music group Suicide Silence started to play "Blind" live, being their cover version - tribute to the song.[24]
Korn played their first 20th Anniversary concert in March 2015, marking the first time several songs off their debut 1994 self-titled "Korn" LP had been performed live in years, including "Daddy," "Predictable" and "Shoots and Ladders."[25]

Meanwhile: Korn continue to perform "Blind" at every live performance throughout the world.
