Sengapadai (Malayalam: செங்கப்படை) is a village 30 km southwest of Madurai city and 10 km southwest of Thirumangalm.
The village was created by Koon Pandiyan (Tamil: கூன் பாண்டியன்), a Pandiya King in the banks of Gounda River as a military base. During earlier period the village was known as Sengol Padai (Tamil: செங்கோல் படை), (English: Military of Throne) which later became Sengappadai.
Geography
Sengapadai is located in Tamil Nadu at the banks of river Gounda, a distributary of river Vaigai. The average elevation of Sengapadai is 12 metre.
This village itself forms a Panchayat and falls under the administrative circles as below;

History
Koon Pandiyan has established a military base at the banks of Gounda River and this place was called as Sengol padai. Later it was known as Sengappadai. This fact is popularly known by the residents of this village.
Not much details are known through the Tamil literature about this village. However, there two very old temples by which this facts can be verified.
There are two main temples one in the west i.e. sennakesava perumal koil and one in the east sidhi vinayakar koil which was constructed in the ere of pandiya kings. The earlist vinayaka temple at the centre of the village had been defaced by the malikapur invasion and still this temple is known as Mottai pillaiyar koil due to its broken head.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Sengapadai had a population of 3,712. Males constitute 1859 of the population and females 1853. Sengapadai has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 63.5%. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. According to 2011 census Sengapadai population is 3,924.Males constitute of 1977 and female is 1947. Literacy rate is 69% , 2,722 out off 3,924 of population are educated. And population density is 356.829

Tamil is spoken predominantly in Sengapadai.

At the moment, all residents in this village are Hindus (100%). However, there were few Christian missionaries activities present in past.

Production
Agriculture
Almost all the lands under Sengapadai's geographical limits are cultivatable. Nearly 60% of families are farmers doing Agriculture. Cotton is the main product of farmers. Sengapadai also produces grains, nuts, cattle feed, sun flower seeds and many vegetables.
Paddy is not produced as there is no big storage pond available which is necessary for the flood irrigation of paddy crop.
Weaving
Nearly 5% of families are doing weaving cloth with handlooms. Mainly cotton cloth is produced.

The rest of population are engaged in Government or Private oriented services.
LIbrary
There was not a library for this thickly populated village. in 2009-10 under the Anna Marumalarchi thittam, A library was created in a new building and it now contains thousand of books of history, literature,fiction and many more.
public bathing cubicles
Two public cubicles for gents had been constructed for public use under panchayat project in the year 2008-09 which proved to be very useful for the general public specially for those who do not have bath room facility. however bathrooms for the ladies yet to be established .
Poultry and dairy farms
Few poultry farms are available, which produce Eggs and Broiler Chickens.
There are few Dairy farms, which supply milk to hardly sufficient for local consumption only.
Industry
As of now there are no industries are available in Sengapadai. Government of Tamil Nadu intends to establish a SIDCO (Small Industries) Complex here. This was heavily opposed by the local farmers in the year 2008, as this could result in loss of many trees and agricultural activities.
Living standards
Many are in the middle income group. Almost all are above the poverty level. Still there are concepts of Castism among the old generation people. This situation has greatly changed nowadays, and the people have realised their human rights.
The village has excellent water distribution and drainage network. But sanitation facilities are very poor.
Still undegradable (like Plastic, glass and metallurgical) wastes management has to be implemented by the Government. Presently these wastes are dumped along with biodegradable wastes in the farming lands. This severely affects the yields from these lands.
There are few private clinics available, which are run by Paramedics.
Postal, telegraphy, telephone and Internet services
The is a village post office available in Sengapadai, which also serves the nearby villages in collecting and distributing. Telegraphy and fax facilities are not available in the village. There are few public telephone booths operated by private owners. There are no public internet booths.
Notable number of families have wired telephone and internet facilities provided by BSNL. Almost all young generation own a cell phone.
notable number of families are now having internet connection with 2G and 3G modems, but the service provided by the telecommunication companies is only 2G spectrum provided by airtel, vodafone and bsnl.
Transport
Road
Sengapadai is connected with Madurai, Thirumangalam and Kalligudi by rural roads and major State Highway roads.Now the road states also improved.
Sengapadai is connected by Tar top roads in South (towards Villur), East (towards Karisalkalampatti, Sivarakottai and Kalligudi), West (towards T.Pudupatti) and North (towards Madurai). now the government of Tamil Nadu has upgraded road facility to tirumangalam and sivarakottai by widening the existing road with tar road capable of double traffic in June 2013.
The primary traffic lies to Thirumangalam and Madurai. State government operated buses form main source of people transportation. Apart from city buses, three-wheeled, black and yellow auto-rickshaws, referred to as autos, are available to reach this village from Thirumangalam.
Since June 1, 2013, government city buses from madurai and tirumangalam are plying to sivarakottai towards east, s.gopalapuram to west and to kandithathevanpatti via puliampwatti are also plying to and fro, making this village as a nodal point of transportation to all the directions.
Rail
No railway facilities are available. The nearest railway station is Thirumangalam.
Airport
The nearest airport is Madurai Airport, which is 24 km from this village. Many young generation have migrated to foreign nations.
