Sean C. Mackey is an American scientist, anesthesiologist, pain medicine specialist and the Redlich Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Neurosciences and Neurology (by courtesy) at Stanford University. He has been the Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine since 2007 and the Director and Founder of the Stanford Systems Neuroscience and Pain Laboratory (SNAPL) since 2002. Mackey served as President of the American Academy of Pan Medicine from 2014-2015 and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Oversight Committee for the NIH/Health and Human Services National Pain Strategy. In 2015, Mackey was awarded the NIH Director's Award for his efforts on the National Pain Strategy.

Education and Training

Mackey graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.S.E and M.S.E. in 1986. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1994. He completed his residency training in anesthesiology at Stanford University Medical Center in 1998 and his clinical fellowship training in pain medicine in 1999. He is board certified in anesthesia and pain management from the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Mackey is the author of over 200 journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, and popular press pieces.

Mackey was born in Oceanside, California. He has one child.
