Rupinderpal Singh Dhillon
Rupinderpal Singh Dhillon (Roop Dhillon) (born 1969) is a British contemporary Punjabi writer who writes Punjabi short stories, novels and poetry.
He was born in West London, and initially raised in Southall. Dhillon studied at Oxford Brookes University and De Montfort University. By profession he is an Accountant. His novel, Neela Noor is considered the first Punjabi novel to be published in the United Kingdom written by an Englishman in the locally spoken Punjabi syntax which is now blurred with English grammar. His work is mainly influenced by Western literature. Dhillon also wrote Annexation, an English novel based partly on the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He is a member of the Punjabi Writers Sahit Kendar in Southall and Baagi Batti, a British Asian group of writers who choose to write in their heritage language. He has evolved a genre and technique in the Punjabi language called Vachitarvaad, which encompasses Sci-fi, Fantasy, Horror and magical realism. Since Neela Noor he has written 5 books, including the experimental O and is now working on the novel Samurai, which is the first Punjabi novel to mix up sci-fi with history and deal with a culture other than that of Punjab.
He was recently interviewed by Roop Ghumman of Venus TV where why he has followed this path rather than English was discussed. He frequently goes on Radio and TV as an example to the new generation on how to keep in touch with their heritage.
