Early life
She was born February 11, 1923 in Women's Hospital (110th Street and Amsterdam Avenue), New York, United States, but moved to Cuba as a small child. Her parents were Spanish, a Catalan father and a mother from Madrid. Her parents divorced soon after with her mother remarrying when she was around 4 to 5 years old taking the surname Fornés from her step-father. When she was 10 years old the family went to Spain and stayed for three years before returning to Cuba.[1]
She made her stage debut in a musical comedy in 1938, and then appeared in two Cuban films before moving to Mexico where she starred in several films during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.[2]
