Reply 1988 (Hangul: 응답하라 1988; RR: Eungdapara 1988) is a 2015 South Korean television series starring Lee Hye-ri, Park Bo-gum, Go Kyung-pyo, Ryu Jun-yeol and Lee Dong-hwi.[1][2][3] It is a drama set in the year 1988 about five friends and their families living in the same neighborhood of Ssangmun-dong, Dobong District, Northern Seoul.[4][5][6][7]
Inspired by MBC's Three Families Under One Roof (1986), Reply 1988 is the third installment of tvN's Reply series.[8] It received both critical and audience acclaim with its finale episode recording an 18.8% audience share making it the highest rated drama in Korean cable television history.[9][10]

Production
Reply 1988 marked the third collaboration between director Shin Won-ho, screenwriter Lee Woo-jung and actors Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa after Reply 1997 (2012) and Reply 1994 (2013). Kim Sung-kyun, who co-starred in 1994 also joined the cast. The first script-reading was held on August 2015.[14]
Unlike the previous Reply series, 1988 focused more on family bond than romantic love among characters with director Shin saying: "Ninety-nine percent of the story was about family, and only one percent was about Duk-seon’s love."[15]
At the 2016 Shanghai Television Festival, director Shin stated that even before filming started Duk-seon (played by Hyeri) was intended to eventually end up with Taek (played by Park Bo-gum) and her changing feelings in the beginning were a mere reflection of the process of growing up from a girl to a mature woman.[16][17]

Contrary to normal drama productions, we have a team of writers working together on this drama. Every writer can express their views and I will choose ideas from different writers. Having ten people with IQ of 130 is smarter than having just one person with IQ of 200. However, no matter how many people there are working on the script, before we start filming, we will fix the main storyline. This is the direction that is approved by everyone, during filming, nothing is to interfere with the development of the main story.
