Raspberry Island (Wisconsin)

Raspberry Island Light Station from Lake Superior
Trail on Raspberry Island

Raspberry Island is one of the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin, in Lake Superior, and is part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.[1] The island is part of the Town of Russell, in Bayfield County. The Raspberry Island Light is located on the island.

An island with the same name is in Teal Lake (Wisconsin) in Sawyer County. Raspberry Island currently does not have deer. The lighthouse was remodeled in 2006 by the National Park Service and cost over 1 million dollars. The lighthouse was kept by keeper, his family and two assistant keepers and their families until the light was automated in 1947. The lighthouse families often kept some animals for food such as chickens and a cow. There is a small historical garden near the light that is maintained by local volunteers and park rangers. The island does have some wild raspberries, especially along the slope below the lighthouse, but the island was actually named for Raspberry Bay along the mainland across from the island.
