Rasipuram is a municipal corporation in Namakkal district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is a town 27 km (17 mi) from Salem, India.[1] As of 2015 the town had a population of 88,584 and around area is 24 km.And more cinema alumni like director M.Saravanan,comedy actor sathish from rasipuram.And it is the 2nd most developing taluk in tamilnadu.

History

Rasipuram is a historic town dating back to at least the 1st century A.D. Rasipuram got its name from Rajapuram which literally means King's Town. Rasipuram is part of ancient Kongu Nadu and the region is known as Rasipura Nadu, an internal division of Kongu. The town is famous for its ghee, handloom silk sarees and education. It is also famous for its Lord Shiva temple, said to have been constructed by King Valvil Ori in the 1st or 2nd century. It is believed that the temple possesses a secret path to the Arapallishwarar (Lord Shiva temple) at top of Kolli hills, which is famous for medicinal herbal plants and natural honey. The County (Nagaratchi) of Rasipuram earlier was under the jurisdiction range of Salem District (Managaratchi), and later was managed by the Namakkal District range. It is famous for weaving Silk Sarees Rasipuram Silks. The silk sarees and dhotis woven in this town were traded and also exported to neighboring countries.

According to 2011 census, Rasipuram had a population of 50,244 with a sex-ratio of 1,077 females for every 1,000 males, much above the national average of 929.[2] A total of 4,168 were under the age of six, constituting 2,183 males and 1,985 females. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes accounted for 12.3% and .53% of the population respectively. The average literacy of the town was 77.71%, compared to the national average of 72.99%.[2] The town had a total of 13104 households. There were a total of 20,138 workers, comprising 334 cultivators, 722 main agricultural labourers, 2,019 in house hold industries, 16,120 other workers, 943 marginal workers, 17 marginal cultivators, 31 marginal agricultural labourers, 84 marginal workers in household industries and 811 other marginal workers.[3] As per the religious census of 2011, Rasipuram had 92.13% Hindus, 6.02% Muslims, 1.79% Christians, 0.01% Sikhs, 0.01% Buddhists, 0.0% Jains, 0.04% following other religions and 0.0% following no religion or did not indicate any religious preference.[4]

Kollihills Valley

Rasipuram is located at 11°28′N 78°10′E / 11.47°N 78.17°E / 11.47; 78.17.[5] It has an average elevation of 246 metres (807 feet). Kolli Hills is located exactly 54 km from Rasipuram. A lot of medicinal plants and fruit varieties like jackfruit, pineapple and banana are available. A festival named after a legendary king Valvil Ori is celebrated to highlight the indigenous traditions, culture and values of the tribal people living in the hills.

Transportation

Rasipuram is located on the highway NH7 which connects Salem and Namakkal. The town is located on the new broad gauge line[6] which connects Salem and Karur. Salem-Karur railway line was opened for rail traffic in May 2013.

The Rasipuram Railway Station (RASP) is well connected to major cities in South India, There are daily express trains from Chennai-Central, Bangalore, Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Palani.

The nearest airport is Salem Airport which is 37 km north of the town.

SH79 - Athur - Mallikkarai - Rasipuram - Tiruchengode - Erode Road and SH95 - Mohanur - Namakkal - Sendamangalam - Rasipuram Road are the two state highways in the town.

Politics

Rasipuram Lok Saba Constituency is removed from the latest alignments and joined in to Namakkal Constituency.[7]
