Providence Christian School, legally named Providence Education Corporation of Kalamazoo, is a small, K through 9, private, Christian school located in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It is associated with the Netherlands Reformed Congregation which is located adjacent to the school.

History

In 1975 a committee was appointed by the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Kalamazoo to study the possibility of starting a private school. Land adjacent to the church (where the school stands today) was purchased in 1976 and the planning began. As the school building had not yet been built by the fall of 1978 the school began in an unused Kalamazoo Public School building rented on Fairview Avenue. School officially began on September 5, 1978 with twenty-two students in the K-8 program. Construction of the 100 Pratt Road building began in the spring of 1979 and as it was not finished in time for the beginning of the 1979 school year the basement of the church building was temporarily used. The ninth grade was added for the 1980-1981 school year and Michigan state certification was granted for the 1982-1983 school year. Large additions were added during the summers of 1985 and 2006. In 1990 Providence began a busing program that allows students to attend Plymouth Christian School for the 10 through 12th grades. This allows students from families in the community to have an entire K-12 education in a private Christian school environment.[1]
