Princess Margarita of Greece and Denmark (Greek: Πριγκίπισσα Μαργαρίτα της Ελλάδας και Δανίας; 18 April 1905 – 24 April 1981) was the eldest child and daughter of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.[1] She was the first great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, and the eldest sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Biography
Princess Margarita was born on 18 April 1905 at the Royal Palace in Athens.[2] She was the sister of Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, the consort of Elizabeth II.[1] She also had three sisters: Theodora, Margravine of Baden; Cecilie, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine; and Sophie, later Princess George of Hanover.
Marriage and children
Margarita married Prince Gottfried of Hohenlohe-Langenburg on 20 April 1931 in Langenburg, Germany.[1] Gottfried was a son of Princess Alexandra of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria through her second son, Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and his wife, Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna of Russia, a daughter of Alexander II of Russia. In descent from Queen Victoria, Prince Gottfried was a second cousin once removed of Princess Margarita and in descent from Nicholas I, they were third cousins.
Gottfried succeeded his father as Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg on 11 December 1950.
Six children were born of their marriage, all of whom were styled as His/Her Serene Highness:[1]

- Prince Kraft Alexander Ernst Ludwig Georg Emich (25 June 1935 - 16 March 2004); succeeded his father as Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg
- Princess Beatrix Alice Marie Melita Margarete of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (10 June 1936 - 15 November 1997)
- Prince Georg Andreas Heinrich of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (born 24 November 1938) married Luise, Princess of Schönburg-Waldenburg on 9 September 1968. They have two daughters:
- Princess Katharina Clementine Beatrix of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (21 November 1972) married Prince Nikolaus of Waldeck and Pyrmont on 29 September 2002. They have two daughters:
- Princess Laetitia of Waldeck and Pyrmont (2 December 2003)
- Princess Alexia of Waldeck and Pyrmont (20 June 2006)
- Princess Tatiana Luise of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (10 February 1975) married Hubertus Stephan on 10 September 2010. They have two sons:

- Princess Katharina Clementine Beatrix of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (21 November 1972) married Prince Nikolaus of Waldeck and Pyrmont on 29 September 2002. They have two daughters:
- Prince Rupprecht Sigismund Philipp Ernst of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (7 April 1944 - 8 April 1978)
- Prince Albrecht Wolfgang Christoph of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (7 April 1944 - 23 April 1992) married Maria-Hildegard Fischer on 23 January 1976. They have one son:
- Prince Ludwig of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (21 April 1976)
Their four elder children were all born at Schwäbisch Hall, while the two youngest boys, twins, were born in Langenburg.[1]
Death
Princess Margarita died on 24 April 1981 in Langenburg, Germany.[1] She survived her husband by 21 years.
