Power Pilates

Power Pilates is a Pilates training method.

History

The program was developed by Susan Moran, Bob Liekens, Phoebe Higgins, and Howard Sichel, a chiropractor.[1] Sichel had experience in the efficacy of Pilates on the progress of the patients, specifically dancers that he treated.[2][3] Sichel had taken over a Pilates studio in 1989, which he relocated into one of the offices in his chiropractic business, and first began developing the Power Pilates program itself in 1997 with Moran and Liekins.[2] The program was an outgrowth of the system developed by Sichel and Phoebe Higgins, who had held a solo practice in Sichel’s 1989 studio.[4]

Training centre

The current training headquarters for the program is the Power Pilates training centre in New York City, where Bob Liekens once served as the educational director.[5][6] Instructors trained here then go to studios or gyms in other US cities to provide Power Pilates classes. [7][8] As of 2012, the studio had produced ten thousand Power Pilates trainers.[2] The company also produces the annual Power Pilates Conference.[9]

Power Pilates program

The Power Pilates program consists of about 500 controlled movements designed to stretch and strengthen muscles. The program is a variant of the original Pilates, focusing on the core of the body in the movements. The program’s exercises can be performed with or without Pilates equipment such as Reformers and Towers.[10] As of 2007 there were six Power Pilates studios in NYC and four others in Equinox Fitness Centres, in addition to affiliate studios in other cities and countries.[4]
