Career
Benbrick co-wrote platinum[6] selling Sakura Nagashi[7][8] (桜流し) with Japanese popstar Hikaru Utada. It was released digitally and charted at No. 1 in multiple places [9][10][11] It was used as the end-credits music to the popular Japanese movie franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン Shin Seiki Evangerion) [7] which was the biggest film opening of 2012[12] and the 12th biggest opening of all time in Japan.[13] The single was included on the 2016 album Fantôme. Upon its overseas release on the iTunes Store, Fantôme debuted at number one in Japan, and 9 other countries. It reached #3 in the United States and hit the top 20 in a further 16 countries.[14][15][16]
Benbrick wrote Gasoline with Troye Sivan which was included on his record TRXYE. The album charted on iTunes at #1 in 66 countries [5] including the USA,[17] United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. TRXYE debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200[18] and by July 2015, the EP had combined downloads of 371,000 in the United States,[19] had sold 80,000 copies of the album, and had been streamed 39 million times.[20]
Benbrick wrote Stand As One from Mary Jess debut album "Shine" which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.[21] Stand As One was used for a global P&G TV advertising campaign.[22] Benbrick also wrote 記得要微笑 on the 2014 Elva Hsiao record "Shut Up And Kiss Me".[23] which reached #1 on the iTunes charts in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Interaction with Ricky Gervais
Benbrick composed 2 pieces[24] that received attention from Ricky Gervais. After cutting the short scores to scenes from the Channel 4 TV Show Derek (TV show).[25] the multi Emmy, BAFTA and Golden Globe winning creator of the show Ricky Gervais came across the music and began to post about it online. On Facebook he called the music "Stunningly beautiful"[26] adding later ‘I just want you to love it as much as I do’.[27][28][29][30][31] After discovering "Perfect Ending" Ricky Gervais called Benbrick "a future genius".[32]
