Patrick Dwyer is an American financial advisor and philanthropist known for his work with the Private Banking and Investment Group,[1] a Merrill Lynch division that serves "ultra-high net worth families."[2] He leads Dwyer & Associates firm in Miami, which is a part of Private Banking & Investment Group.[3] As an expert, he has been interviewed or featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal,[3] Barron's, Fortune,[4] Spears,[4][5] and Florida Trend.[4]

From 2006 until 2016 he has been included in Barron's America’s Top 100 Financial Advisors list,[6][7][8][9] and the publication has ranked him the No. 1 financial advisor in Florida five times,[1][4][6][10][11] including 2016.[12] Dwyer is the founder of the Dwyer Family Foundation, which supports educational and religious organizations[13] in the Miami-Dade area.[14]

Early life and education

Patrick "Pat" J. Dwyer was born circa 1968.[15] From 1985 until 1987 he attended high school at Oratory Preparatory School in Summit, New Jersey.[7] His father worked as a "classic value investor" during Dwyer's adolescence.[5][16] Dwyer attended Providence College in Rhode Island from 1987 to 1991.[7] He graduated with bachelor's degrees[4][15] in economics and history.[13][15] He afterwards attended the University of Miami from 1991 to 1993,[2][7] graduating with an MBA in business administration.[13]

Career

In July 1993[7] Dwyer moved to New York City[13] to spend a year in the Merrill Lynch MBA Analyst Program at Merrill Lynch headquarters.[2] Dwyer returned to Miami in 1994 to work for Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor.[2] In 1999 he became one of the first advisors to join Merrill Lynch's newly formed Private Banking and Investment Group, a division "established to serve the needs of ultra-high net worth families."[2] While serving as a managing director for Private Banking and Investment Group, Dwyer also founded the advisory practice Dwyer & Associates under the division's auspices.[13] The Dwyer Group "offers active and passive management, with no proprietary products."[7] As of 2010,[17] Dwyer headed a "team of eight who oversee the financial affairs of 32 ultrawealthy families."[17] He became certified by Merrill Lynch as a retirement benefits consultant in February 2013, and as a personal investment advisor in November 2013.[7] According to Barron's, as of March 2013 Dwyer managed "$2 billion in total assets."[11] In March 2014, the Sun Sentinel claimed that "today, Dwyer & Associates is regarded as one of the top ten advisory practices at Merrill Lynch worldwide."[4] By late 2014 he was overseeing "$2.5 billion in assets."[18]

On October 15, 2014, he was featured on Barron's television as an expert on the topic of bond investors and future prices.[19] By that time, he had also been quoted as an expert in publications such as Fortune,[4] Spears,[4][5] and Florida Trend.[4] On February 27, 2015, Barron's published a full article on Dwyer, writing in the article byline that "current probabilities, not history, shape the Florida advisor's strategy for his clients."[15] In October 2015, he was one of three "ultra-HNW [(high net worth)] managers" asked to participate in a panel discussion led by Sterling Shea of Barron's.[20] As of October 2015, he oversaw $2.6 billion in assets, and his firm was the "No. 4 producing advisory practice of Merrill Lynch worldwide."[6] Overseen assets had risen to $2.7 billion by 2016.[14] After Barron's again named Dwyer their pick for Top Financial Advisor in Florida in 2016,[21] he was published in the Wall Street Journal in May 2016 as part of the publication's "Voices" series.[3]

Boards and philanthropy

Involved in local philanthropy, Dwyer founded the Dwyer Family Foundation, which helps support educational and religious organizations[13] in the Miami-Dade area. In the past the Dwyer Family Foundation has supported educational stewardship programs, educational programs for young girls and women, and "schools that specialize in the education of children with dyslexia, ADHD and short-term memory deficits, among other learning difficulties."[14] As of 2014, Dwyer was serving on the board of trustees for both the Key Biscayne Community Foundation and the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Miami.[4][14] He is also on the boards[14] of the Neuroscience Centers of Florida Foundation and the Telluride Science Research Center.[4] Dwyer has served as a periodic guest speaker for his alma maters Providence College and the University of Miami.[4]
