PHLX Semiconductor Sector
The PHLX Semiconductor Sector (SOX) is a Philadelphia Stock Exchange capitalization-weighted index composed of companies primarily involved in the design, distribution, manufacture, and sale of semiconductors.
History
The index was set to an initial value of 200 on December 1, 1993 and was split two-for-one on July 24, 1995; options commenced trading on September 7, 1994.
Components
As of July 21, 2014, there were 30 semiconductor companies represented in the index. The composition and weighting of the index is reported monthly on the nasdaqomx website

Investing
Apart from investing in the individual stocks there is also the option to invest in an exchange-traded fund (ETF). The fund iShares PHLX SOX Semiconductor Sector (NASDAQ: SOXX) tracks this index. Previously this fund used a different index and had ticker "IGW".[1] There is also a fund Market Vectors Semiconductor ETF (NYSE Arca: SMH).
