Patlolla Indra Reddy (Hindi: इंद्र रेड्डी, Telugu: ఇంద్ర రెడ్డి; 4 October 1954 – 22 April 2000) was an Indian Politician and former Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh, India.[1] Indra Reddy was elected to the State Assembly of Andhra Pradesh four times.
In his tenure, he served as the Minister of Education, Minister of Labour and Employment, Minister of Home Affairs of Andhra Pradesh. He founded Jai Telangana Party in 1998. He was also part of Indian National Congress, Telugu Desam Party.
Early life
Indra Reddy was born on 4 October 1954 in Kowkuntla village in Chevella Mandal located in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana. Indra Reddy studied M.A. from City College and LL.B from Osmania University.
Political career
Indra Reddy started his political career when he was Sarpanch of his village before he joined the Telugu Desam Party in the year 1985. Indra Reddy was elected to the State Assembly four times. He was first elected on a Telugu Desam Party ticket in the year 1985 and served as the Minister of Education, Minister of Labour and Employment in N. T. Rama Rao's cabinet. He was re-elected on a Telugu Desam Party ticket in the year 1989 and 1994. Minister of Home Affairs of Andhra Pradesh in the N. T. Rama Rao's cabinet during 1994-95.
During the August 1995 crisis in the Telugu Desam Party, when N. T. Rama Rao was toppled by his son-in-law N. Chandrababu Naidu in a party and family coup, Indra Reddy remained loyal with N. T. Rama Rao. After N. T. Rama Rao's death in January 1996, Reddy joined Lakshmi Parvathi's party NTR Telugu Desam Party (Lakshmi Parvathi) but soon fell out with her and joined the Indian National Congress. He was re-elected to the State Assembly in the September 1999 poll on an Indian National Congress ticket.
Jai Telangana Party
Indra Reddy formed the Jai Telangana Party, a political party in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh which was part of the Rashtriya Janata Dal-led Jan Morcha (People's Front) in the 1998 elections. Jai Telangana Party worked for a separate Telangana state to be craved out of Andhra Pradesh. After the 1998 elections, he merged his Jai Telangana Party with Indian National Congress.
Death
On 22 April 2000, Indra Reddy died in a car accident in Palmakuru village near Shamshabad when the car carrying Indra Reddy, accompanied by the Ranga Reddy District Congress Committee President, two gunmen and the driver rammed into a stationary lorry. The accident took place post 12:00 a.m. in the midnight, while Reddy was returning from his native, Chevella, after attending a wedding ceremony. Patlolla Indra Reddy Ghat, a memorial to Indra Reddy is located in Chevella, Andhra Pradesh.[2]
Personal life
Indra Reddy was married to Sabitha Indra Reddy, also an Indian politician and the first woman Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh, India. Sabitha Indra Reddy was elected two times to the State Assembly from Chevella constituency and was a member of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's Council of Ministers and served as the Minister of Mines & Geology and Minister of Home Affairs.[3] Indra Reddy and Sabitha Reddy have three sons, namely Karthik Reddy, Kaushik Reddy and Kalyan Reddy. His eldest son Karthik Reddy joined the Indian National Congress and contested for the first time from Chelvella Lok Sabha constituency on an Indian National Congress ticket in the Indian general election, 2014, but lost the election to Telangana Rashtra Samithi's candidate Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, who had no problem in the race and won an easy battle. He won by 78,000 votes. [4]
Legacy
On memory of Indra Reddy, P Indra Reddy Memorial Engineering College, was established in the year 2002 by Manisha Educational Trust, founded by Dr Patolla Mahender Reddy. Dr Patolla Mahender Reddy is the nephew of Indra Reddy. P Indra Reddy Memorial Engineering College is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH) and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Indra Reddy had a vision to encourage technical education in the state of Andhra Pradesh, which led to the formation of Manisha Educational Trust and eventually the trust established P Indra Reddy Memorial Engineering College in the year 2002, in the fond memory of late Indra Reddy.
