New York Musical Improv Festival
The New York Musical Improv Festival (NYMIF) is a four-day festival held every October at the Magnet Theater in New York City. The EIGHTH annual NYMIF runs October 13–16, 2016.
NYMIF has featured performers such as Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Jeff Hiller. Since 2010, NYMIF has teamed with Gildas Club raising money and awareness for women and families living with cancer. Previous Gilda Club benefits have featured people such as Cady Huffman, Orfeh, and Donna Vivino. Founded in 2009 by T.J. Mannix and producers Robin Rothman, Melanie Girton, and Mary Archbold, the NYMIF presaged the rise of Musical Improvisation at comedy theaters across the U.S. and Canada in the 2010s.
- The Magnet Theater expanded its program from one elective to a four-level musical improv conservatory (under the direction of Tara Copeland, Frank Spitznagel and current director Michael Lutton) and now features eight musical house teams, performing original 30-minute musicals every week.
