Naseer Shamma (Arabic: نصير شمه‎‎) is an Iraqi musician and oud player.

He was born in 1963 in Kut, a city on the Tigris River. He began studying the oud at the age of 12 in Baghdad, following in the footsteps of Jamil and Munir Bashir. He received his diploma from the Baghdad Academy of Music in 1987. He began to teach oud after three years at the academy, as well as continuing his own studies. Shamma has composed music for films, plays and television and created the Arabic Oud House.

Naseer Shamma's music and poetry


Naseer Shamma started his early formation of the relation between poetry and music. He had lots of work in the field of musically read poetry; including: -
• Music reading with the participation of the artist Aziz Khyoun in the Federation of Iraqi Writers, where he presented the "stranger on the Gulf" and "Rain Song" to the great poet Badr Shakir al-Sayyab in 1986.

• Music piece entitled "Declaring my love silently" from a poem by the poet Ibrahim Zidan the same name for a TV cultural Baghdad in 1993.

• Participated in the Sixth International Festival of Babylonby composing a poem by El Gawahry entitled "Oh Tigris Good or orchards" and performed it himself within the festival in 1994.

• Music Reading for five poems from "Why did you leave the horse alone" by the great poet [Mahmoud Darwish] presented at a joint concert for them in Tunisia, Berlin (Germany), and Boston (USA) in 1995.

• Made with the artist Jawad Alchukrgi more than 13 joint performances of "Rain Song" and "Stranger to the Gulf"by the poet Badr Shaker Al Sayab at several Tunisian festivals, that received great demand in 1995.

• Music piece entitled "weird gull" dedicated to the great Iraqi poet, "Muzaffar Alnowab" in a ceremony attended by the poet who later improvised a poem, because of the music piece, delivered in the same theater in 1996.

• Evening of "Shahrazad / Forum of female Arab poets" at the ending of Sousse international festival, session 38 on the open-air stage. The ceremony included Music reading to poems of 10 female poets who were: Fadwa Toukan - Palestine, Fadila El Sbby and Fawzia Al Elwi - Tunisia, Zulekha Abu Risha - Jordan, Wafa Imrany - Morocco, Lina El Tibi - Syria, Wedad El Gourani - Iraq, Inaya Gabir - Lebanon, Mona Abdel Azim - Egypt, Thoraya El Arid - Bahrain. In 1996.

• The musical piece "Qolto man Za" with the Tunisian singer Saneya Mubarak, which lasted for a year and a half on several stages in several countries, The piece is in 10 signed texts by poets Amal Dunqul, Lamiaah AbbasAmara, Ali El Lawati, Nouri Al-Jarrah, Bechara ElKhoury, Lina El Tibi, Jabbar Sahm, and a poem by Naseer Shamma. In 1997.

• Music reading of the poem "Rain" taken from a poem by the poet Amal Dunqul in 1998.

• The opening night Musical reading by Haidar Mahmoudand Talal Haidar in the seventeenth Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts on the northern stage in Jordan in 1998.

• Musical piece "Anafeih Ala Malaa" from the poem text for the Iraqi poet Lamiaa Abbas Omarah in 1998.

• Collection of poems sung in the Seventh "Arab Music Festival" in the Egyptian Opera House entitled :"the night after the millennium", a poetic evening that presented poems by youthful voices: - poem "Law Anbani El Araf" (If the fortune teller told me) by the Iraqi poet Lamiaa Abbas Omarah and presented by Hayat El Idrisi - Morocco, and the poem "Al ghariban" (The strangers) by Amal Dunqul sung by the Tunisian singers Mohamed El Jebali and Enas Samar. Also, the poem "Arab blood" by Farouk Shousha sung by the Egyptian Ibrahim Hefnawi. And lastly the poem "El Leila Leiletna" by the Tunisian Mahjoub Al Ayari and sung by Abir Nasraoui. In 1998.

• Music reading for a number of poems of the great poet Adonis in 2000.

• Oud recital with a poetic reading by the poet Lina Al Tibiin Norway in 2000.

• Celebration of the launch of the magazine "Diwan" of Arabic and German poetry in Germany, as a project aiming to translate Arabic poetry to German. The opening ceremony was attended by poets Adonis and Amal Jubouri and on the German side Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Joachim Sartorius. In 2001.

• A poetic musical evening for selections of poems by Amal Dunqul. Composed by Naseer Shamma and performed by each of the Ali El Hajjar and Karima El Okali with "Eyon" band. In 2003.

• Musical reading and composing texts entitled "Laysa Nahran waheda" by the poet Amjad Nasser, in which the artists Khaled El Nabawy and Wael Sami participated, in 2005.

• Hosted the Ceremony of the second forum of the prose poem In Egypt in 2010.

• Hosted the opening of House of Poetry in Cairo in the presence of the Director of the House of Poetry, poet Abdel Muti Hijazi, and a bunch of Egyptian and Arab poets. There he presented a new work about the poet Ahmed Shawki, another new one about Badr Shaker Al Sayab

• Also an old work of his about Garcia Lorca. And finally, a work of the poem by Mahmoud Darwish, entitled "Taleem Horreya" in 2010.

Naseer Shamma’s Music and Theatre

He made the soundtracks for many Iraqi and Arab plays, including: -

• Play: "Al Belad talabat Ahlaha" by Abdul Latif Akl and directed by Al Monsef Al Souissi. He received an award for that work at the Carthage Festival the following year in 1989.

• Won the same award for the soundtrack of "A contemporary love story", directed by Hani Hani and written by Falah Shaker in 1991.

• Soundtrack of the play "Vince bin Shifat" by Abdel-LatifAkl from Nablus and directed by artist Mohammed Qasimin 1991.

• The play "Moon of Blood" about the tragedy of Amiriya shelter: poems written by Abdel Wahab al-Bayati, JosephSayegh and Khazaal Majidi. It was premiered in the same shelter of Amiriya. It was written and directed by Dr. Fadel Khalil in 1992.

• He made his first operate, in an eastern form under the name "Shahriar”. It premiered in Babylon Festival, then at the 31st Festival of Carthage. Then in Monastir and Sousse in Tunisia in collaboration with fashion house with Iraqi poet Abdul Razzaq Abdul Wahid, who put the texts and poetic vision in 1995.

• He made the soundtracks of more than 30 theatric works until 1998. They were distributed between Iraq and the Arab world with theater directors Qassim Mohammed, Sami Abdel-Hamid, Fadel Khalil, Aziz Khyoun, AkeelMahdi, Awni kromi, and Al Monsif Al Souissi from Tunisia, and Al Tayeb Al Siddiqi from Morocco.. And others.

• Soundtrack of ballet music, "the return of gulls" in 1998.

• Created the soundtracks of the work "Resalet Al Teyr" taken from Ibn Sina and al-Ghazali and presented on the stage of hangars for Arts in Cairo, directed by MohammedQasim in 2000.

• Presented with the modern dance troupe directed by Walid Awni presentation entitled "Shahrazad" - to Korsakov. And he put of his vision for the Eastern tale Shahrazad presented with his band playing live in the eyes of more than 30 live shows+ inside and outside Egypt, including the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2000.

Interested in them from the beginning of his career, he mademusic soundtrack of a lot of movies and documentaries, including:

• Soundtrack of the movie "Dawn of a Sad Day," directed by Salah al-Karam in 1986.

• Cooperated in the late eighties with the Iraqi director Abdal-Hadi al-Rawi in a movie entitled "Mr. Director".

• Soundtrack of movie "Teresa and the crazy songs," directed by U.S. director with Italian background Jean-John Vito in 1995.

• Soundtracks of other Canadian and British movies, with the director Wakefield, at the same time period.

• Soundtracks of movie "Bint Familia" in 1997 to Tunisian director Al Nouri Bouzid and music was made into a CD holding the same name through important French publishers.

• By the end of 1998, he had made soundtracks for over 20movies with European and Canadian production.

• In 2006 he won an award for best soundtrack from Radio France Blue international on the soundtracks of the movie "Dreams", directed by Mohammed al-Darraji, It won 8 awards at several festivals. The movie was nominated in more than 40 festivals. Furthermore, the movie won the gold in the Festival of the Mediterranean Sea in 2006.

• Soundtracks of the movie entitled "Alharepettan" directed by Ahmad El Nahas and produced by Samiha Ayoub. In2010.

Naseer Shamma, Television and Radio

• Cooperation with Iraqi television in hosting a music program for children with Hussein Kaddouri titled "Do, Re, Mi" in 1986.

• Hosted a program named "A musical reading of the painting" in a period of three minutes in TV Iraq in 1992.

• Hosted his successful program "Music .. Music" in 1993.

• Solo played the Oud for Radio France. Radio France also recorded a long interview with him and broadcast it in 80 of its radio stations in 1996.

• Composed religious prayers in the month of Ramadan, sung by Afaf Radi and Majd Al Kasem in the Voice of Arabia station, Egypt, in 1999.

• Composed soundtracks for a number of television series as "Zeyab El Lail", directed by Iraqi director Hassan Hosni, "Asayel" in 1990, "Al kaf wa Almkhrz" with the Syrian director Najdat Anzor, the series “Al Masara” and the series "Afwan Habebaty" with the Egyptian director Nadia Hamza, The series “The Arabs of London”, directed by Anwar Quadry in 2009, and the series "Heykayat Almdandas", directed by Ahmed al Nahas, and many other works.

Naseer Shamma and Plastic Arts

Naseer Shamma has a real passion for fine arts. He has worked on trying to read the arts musically, and study the effect of music on the artists… He had in that several experiments, including:

• Distinctive visual experience with the Iraqi "Jamil Hammoud". It was repeated with seven Iraqi artists near the Abbasid Palace in Baghdad to assess "drawing under the influence of music" in 1986.

• He has a work dedicated to the great Iraqi artist Jawad Salim as the "pause at the tomb of Jawad Salim". It was presented at the Festival of Baghdad in Iraq in 1988.

• Program "A musical Reading of a painting" for a three-minute period in Iraqi TV in 1992.

• Extrapolation gallery full of Iraqi artist Jamil Hamoudimade in the "Hawareyat Jamil Hammoudi" which he played in the presence of audience in the hall of Inanna for the arts.

• The work of "post-deprivation" he called "HwareyetShakir Hassan Al Said" presented in Tunisia in the presence of the artist in gallery of Mr. Reza Amouri 1998.

• The opening ceremony of the exhibition "Contemporary Iraqi Art," Arts Palace, Opera House, Egypt, to showcase the work of ten Iraqi sculptors. Those artists were: Shaker Hassan, Diaa al-Azzawi, Ala Bashir, Nuri al-Rawi, SaadiAl-Kaabi, Rafie Al Nasery, Ali Al Jabri, MohammedMahd El Din, Ali Taleb, Salim al-Dabbagh. In additionto the guest of the show, the late Iraqi artist Layla Attar. Layla Attar died in 1993 after a U.S. missile hit her house in Baghdad. She served as the director of the National Museum in Baghdad. Also, there were held on the sidelines of the exhibition seminars and cultural programs to show full support for Iraq during the period of the siege in 2002.

Bands

Naseer Shamma founded many bands: -

• Band "Sodasy Al Anamel Azahabeya", one of Iraq's finest instrumentalists, in 1984.

• Band "Al Bayareq" in 1986.

• Eyes set of the Arabic music chamber in Cairo in 1999.

• Orchestra Al Sharq consisting of seventy players from all over the East in 2008.

• Arab Oud House Group, consisting of thirty multiple sizesOud players. It has set up many concerts in the world like Mawazeen Festival in Rabat in 2006. Others in Paris, Cairo, Carthage Festival 2007, and the Baalbek Festival 2010 and many other cities in 2008.

Concerts with International Artists

Naseer Shamma has lots of experiences with foreign artists in the context of East-West dialogue, and experiments in which modern musical collaboration with:

• Italian Lute player Franco Vobas years 1995, 2003.

• World guitarist Enrico de Whittled and flamenco singer Khozoah Mneza with a group of Latin percussion instruments in 1997.

• Pakistani artist Ashraf Khan on sitar in 1999.

• Conducted a musical interview with Ansgar Krause on guitar in the German festival in Egypt, 2003.

• Edward Paniagua and David Mayoral rhythm in 2004.

• Guitarist Carlos Penina in 2008.

• Jazz legend Wynton Marsalis in 2010.

• Sharaf Khan and Shahbaz Hussain at a ceremony in Spain in 2011.

Publications


• His first disc entitled "Eastern love story" from France in 1994.

• Arab World Institute issued another edition of the disc"Eastern love story". The production of several editions by the Arab World Institute in Paris entitled "Oud from Baghdad", in 1994.

• His second disc entitled "sunshine" from Italy byFoundation, in 1996.

• His disc "before I get crucified", the name of the disc is based on experiencing the last moments of the life ofHallaj. It was reprinted in Tunisia in 1997.

• A set of cassettes in Tunisia to fit with the ease of distribution in the Arab world: - "The night of Baghdad" and "Eastern Love story" and "declaring my love silently" and "for the Children of Iraq" and "From the Heart" in 1997.

• His disc, "the departure of the Moon" from Britain produced by Incognito for a concert in Boston in 1999.

• Video tape entitled "Oud Naseer Shamma," issued by the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi in 2000.

• Re-issuance of the tape "the departure of the Moon" by issuing a special with the great poet Adonis in 2000.

• Cassette tape, "the siege of Baghdad," from Cairo, 2000.

• His disc "Makamat Ziriab min Al forat ila Al Wadi AlKaber" registered in Spain and published from Australia in 2003.

Contemporary Work

• Naseer Shamma now runs his school The Arabic Oud House in Cairo, an ancient house in Fatimid Cairo "HrawiHouse", a project to establish the specifications needed by the solo oud player.

• This is in addition to supervising The Arabic House ofOud branches, which were inaugurated in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in 2007, in Constantine, Algeria, and in the library of Alexandria, 2011.

• Add to the continuous performances inside and outside the Arab world, and interest in direct institution by flowers that deal with the treatment and education of Iraqi children inside and outside Iraq, in addition to his interest in humanitarian and national issues throughout the Arab world and more broadly to include humanitarian issues in the world and most recently preparing for a tour to help the Somali people to resist the drought which hit their homes in cooperation with the United Nations.
