Mohammad Fazlul Azim (born 1945) is a Bangladeshi industrialist, business magnate and former politician.[2] He is the chairman of Azim Group, a leading garments company which had a export turnover of over US$220 million in 2014. He was an independent member of parliament of the Jatiyo Sangshad.[3][4][5] He is a very influential and well-known businessman and was a successful member of parliament in Bangladesh.[6] Mohammad Fazlul Azim was the only independent lawmaker in the parliament during his time in the Jatiyo Sangshad .[7]

Education

Mohammad Fazlul Azim is a graduate of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.[1] He graduated in 1965 and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc) in mechanical engineering.[1][2]

Business career

Mohammad Fazlul Azim is a pioneer in Bangladesh's readymade garments industries.[8] He founded Azim Group in 1975.[1] In the 1980s, Mr. Mohammd Fazlul Azim was one of the very few who established some of the first few garment factories in Bangladesh.[9] The very first factory of Azim Group was Azim Mannan Garments Ltd. which was named after Mohammad Fazlul Azim himself and his former partner (currently Chairman of Sunman Group), Major (Retd) Abdul Mannan.[4] With only one garment factory and limited workers and skills in 1980, today under the control and guidance of Mohammad Fazlul Azim, Azim Group has emerged as a big clothing manufacturer. In 2014, Azim Group had a export turnover of over US$220 million and today it has created employment for over 26,000 people.[1][4] Azim Group now has 23 garments factories and 3 backward linkage factories.[10] His company produces clothes for some of the world's leading brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Gap Inc., Zara, PVH Corp., Kohl's, VF Corporation, Pull&Bear, Joe Fresh, kmart, Aldi, Joe Fresh etc.[11] Mohammad Fazlul Azim has also expanded his business overseas by setting up a sourcing and marketing hub in Hong Kong and a liaison office in New York City.[12]

Apart from involvements and businesses in the garments and readymade garments (RMG) sector, Mohammad Fazlul Azim has expanded his company's business in other sectors. Azim Group has its very own packaging and paper business. The company has a factory which produces cartons and paper for the packaging of its goods. Azim Group has also invested in the media industry of Bangladesh. The company owns an online newspaper called Banglamail24 which provides international and national news in Bengali to citizens daily.

Mohammad Fazlul Azim was the honorable member of parliament (MP) of Bangladesh. He was the MP of Noakhali-6. In addition, he was the only member who was an independent lawmaker in the parliament. Alongside his role as a Member of Parliament (MP), Mohammad Fazlul Azim was a member of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Water Resources.[2] In his political career, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for 3 terms.[2]

Philanthropy

Mohammad Fazlul Azim has a college under his name which is called Prokousholi Mohammad Fazlul Azim Mohila College.[13]The college is located in Mohammad Fazlul Azim's hometown Hatiya which is in the Noakhali District.[14]The college is an all female one and it is a day college.[13] The curriculum of the college is Bangla.[13] It offers and teaches subjects such as Humanities, Science and Business Studies to female students in Hatiya.[13]

Mohammad Fazlul Azim has also made many donations in Bangladesh and has contributed to a large extent in his hometown, Hatiya.
