Michelle Bernadette Cowley PGDipStat BA DPhil is a social statistician and a Royal Statistical Society Fellow elected member.[1] She is an expert on foresight cognition, statistical judgment, and has contributed to the top 200 international public understanding of law findings on juror-bias in probative judgment in the last ten years.[2] She is a high-impacting author, conference speaker, and engager with the public through media and evaluative report writing.[3] This research has led to 70 public domain outputs, 150+ peer review or media citations, and acknowledgements.[4]
She has held postdoctoral, visiting scholar, and executive administrative level positions in five QS Top 100 universities and FTSE 100 Index companies collectively (2006-2016) including: Princeton University, the University of Oxford (Wolfson College), and Imperial Brands Plc. She has been a Katzenbach Fellow and Associate Fellow of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, University of Oxford (2007-2011), and an Economic and Social Science Research Council Peer Review College Member (2009-2014). She was awarded an Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences postgraduate scholarship,[5] resulting in her doctoral thesis on the role of Popperian falsification in mathematical hypothesis testing[6][7] achieving critical acclaim.[8][9][10]
Much of her postdoctoral work focuses on logical versus probability frameworks of the hypothesis testing divide, and the balance between qualitative and quantitative methodological inferences to be drawn about human reasoning in context. More recently her focus has been on international markets, where amongst other industry events, she witnessed the end of brand houses and the introduction of the plain packaging directive in tobacco industries.[11] Presently she is an RSS methodological advisor for researchers working on public health funding applications for HSC Northern Ireland, and developing digital technology marketing solutions to recruitment and logistics problems in the health sector.[12][13] Her doctoral, academic, management studies, marketing and legal research papers have been cited in world class media, peer-review journals and books, and published in international journals, e-journals, and conference proceedings.[14][15][16]
