Michael McCavish

Michael McCavish (March 10, 1961) is an aikido instructor at Shodokan Aikido Hombu Osaka. He encountered aikido in 1988 in Osaka. He has lived and worked in Japan for close to 30 years, training under Tetsuro Nariyama Shihan 9th Dan, earning his 6th Dan in Shodokan Aikido in 2013. McCavish started to earn the respect of his peers in 2000 at the Friendship Games held in Virginia U.S.A. Although the tournament was officially a U.S.A national tournament it was considered amongst the Shodokan community as a world championship. Competitors included the then current world champion Manny Vargas as well as the Japanese champion Kinoshita. Mccavish went on to win the individulal gold medal for randori and also for freestyle kata. Three years later in 2003 Mccavish went on to win a gold medal at the World Championships held in Leeds this time for team randori.[1] Acknowledged as contributing to the ongoing global promotion of Shodokan Aikido McCavish was accredited as a contributor to the translation of the core Shodokan Japanese text Aikido Kyogi by Fumiaki Shishida and Tetsuro Nariyama into the English Aikido, Tradition and the Competitive Edge.[2] McCavish has mentored students internationally and currently oversees the ongoing aikido careers of instructors in Switzerland, the Philippines, Australia, the United Kingdom[3] USA, and Japan. He is known for strongly advocating students to take their Dan Gradings at Shodokan Hombu in Osaka.[4]

McCavish founded the Japanese based Madagascan Ark Organization in 2010 which supports conservation projects and breeding programs for the unique, endangered fauna of Madagascar.[5]

Mccavish is one of a very small group of elite traveling instructors from the Shodokan Hombu Dojo in Osaka Japan. He assists Tetsuro Nariyama Shihan in spreading the teaching of Kenji Tomiki Shihan; Shodokan Aikido, also known as Tomiki Aikido and Sport Aikido. McCavish is a polyglot speaking 7 languages and teaches in several of them.[6]
