Nathan Astle is a former international cricketer, who represented the New Zealand cricket team between 1995 and 2007. He scored centuries (100 or more runs in a single innings) in Test cricket and One Day Internationals (ODI) on 11 and 16 occasions respectively. Described by BBC Sport as "[a]n attacking opener in one-day cricket" and "one of the best one-day batsmen New Zealand has ever produced",[1][2] Astle is the second-highest run-scorer for his country in international cricket.[3]

Astle made his ODI debut against the West Indies at Eden Park, Auckland in January 1995.[1] His first century came the same year against India at the Vidharba Cricket Association Ground, Nagpur. Opening the batting, Astle made 114 runs from 128 balls in a match which New Zealand won. He followed that with another century in the 1996 Cricket World Cup, against England. Astle's match-winning innings of 119 against Pakistan finds a mention in the 100 best ODI innings of all-time by Wisden in 2002.[4] He scored his second century in World Cup, this time against Zimbabwe in the 2003 tournament.[5] His highest ODI total of 145 not out was achieved against the United States during the 2004 Champions Trophy.[6] In ODIs Astle was most successful against India making five centuries.[7] Astle ended up in the nineties on nine occasions,[lower-alpha 1] including twice where he remained not out.[9]

Astle made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in 1996, a year after he started playing international cricket.[1] Later that year, when he was picked up for the West Indies tour where he scored back-to-back hundreds.[10] His highest score was recorded against England at the Jade Stadium, Christchurch in 2002 when he made 222 from 168 balls.[2] In the course of the innings, he set two records—fastest double-century scored in Test cricket,[lower-alpha 2] and the second-highest individual score in the fourth innings of a Test match.[lower-alpha 3] As of August 2015, he has the most centuries for New Zealand in international cricket.[12] Astle played four Twenty20 International matches between 2005 and 2006, without recording a century.[10] His highest score in the format was 40 not out.[10]
