List of districts in Jammu and Kashmir
The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir consists of three divisions: Jammu, Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, and is further divided into 22 districts:[1] This excludes 78,114 km2 under the administration of Pakistan, 5,180 km2 handed over by Pakistan to China and 37,555 km2 under the administration of China in Ladakh district.[2]
History
At the time of the princely state's accession to India on 26 October 2016, the territory under the state control included major portions of the Jammu province and Kashmir province, the Gilgit Agency and the Ladakh district. Large parts of the western districts Mirpur, Poonch and Muzaffarabad were in rebel hands. The Gilgit Agency and the Skardu tehsil of the Ladakh district have passed to the Pakistani control in the ensuing months. The remaining territory had the following districts:[3][4]
- Jammu province: Districts of Reasi, Jammu, Kathua and Udhampur, as well as semi-autonomous jagirs of Poonch, Chenani and Bhaderwah.
- Kashmir province: Districts of Kashmir South (Anantnag) and Kashmir North (Baramulla), and a portion of the Muzaffarabad district.
- Ladakh district: Kargil and Leh tehsils.
The districts were reorganised by 1968, breaking up some of the larger districts.[5] In 2006, eight new districts were created: Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi, Samba, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kulgam and Shopian.[6]
