Limestone Community High School District 310

Limestone Community High School is a public high school in Bartonville, Peoria County, Illinois. The school is at the corner of Airport and Pfeiffer Roads, has an enrollment of 1,181 students in 2012, and is in the Mid-Illini Conference.[1] It is the only high school of Limestone Community High School District 310.

History

Before the 1950s, Bartonville had no high school of its own; students went to Pekin or Peoria, and their expenses were paid for by a non-high-school district, but without control over the schools the students were attending. Consolidating with other school districts was considered, but it was determined that joining Peoria Public Schools District 150 would require annexation into the city of Peoria, and that neither the Elmwood or the Glasford school districts had the capacity to take on the 570 students in the area. A group of educators and other citizens decided that the only solution was to build a high school.[2]

A public election on February 5, 1949, voted District 310 into existence; and, on March 14, the board of education first met and elected its officers.[2]

Limestone Community High School opened on October 14, 1953. It was annexed into the village of Bartonville in June 1957.[2]

In 2013, a recent graduate of Limestone, William Bessler, was elected to the district's Board of Education. Elected at the age of 19, Mr. Bessler campaigned on a series of issues, but focused mainly on improving the school's academic record. Various changes were discussed by Mr. Bessler including the implementation of a weighted grades system, drug testing for students participating in extra-curricular activities, creating an in-school-suspension program, reducing standardized testing, and reforming graduation requirements. A notable Limestone alumnus is MLB slugger, Jim Thome who played the majority of his career with the Cleveland Indians. Thome is 7th on the all time HR list.

Activities

The sports teams, called the Rockets, wear white and blue. LCHS not only fields many athletic teams, but also offers many clubs and organizations to the students.
