LGAA UAVs are Chinese experimental UAVs developed by Liaoning Liaoning General Aviation Academy (LGAA, 辽宁通用航空研究院) in Shenyang. Of the two UAVs developed, both are designed to explore applications of new power source on UAVs.
Shen Eagle 1
Shen Eage 1 (Shen-Ying Yi-hao or Shenying Yihao, 沈鹰1号) is the first UAV designed by LGAA, and it is also abbreviated as SY-1. SY-1 made is maden flight in May 2012, two months ahead of LN60F Thunderbird, the second UAV developed by LGAA.[1] Shen Eagle 1 is built of composite material, and it is electrically powered. Based on Shen Eagle 1, a two-seat light aircraft RX1E (Rui-Xiang or Ruixiang, 锐翔) was successfully developed for production, with operating cost is just a third of fossil fuel powered aircraft of the same class.[2] Flight time 90 minutes, speed 86 knots, expected price $163,000.[3]
LN60F Thunderbird
LN60F Thunderbird (Lei-Niao or Leiniao, 雷鸟) is an UAV powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Other enterprise and established assisted in the development of LN60F Thunderbird included Shenyang Aircraft Design Institute.[4] LN60F Thunderbird has a conventional layout with T-tail, and tricycle landing gear. Propulsion is provided by a two-blade propeeler engine mounted in the nose, and the engine is powered by proton exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cell.[5] The aircraft is built from carbon fiber, and the general designer is academician Mr. Yang Fengtian (杨凤田).[6] Specification:[7]
- Wingspan: 10.5 m
- Length: 4.7 m
- Height: 2.2 m
- Max takeoff weight: 257 kg
- Speed: 120 km/h
- Endurance: 4 h
- Payload: > 100 kg
