High school career

Burkhart attended Kinsley High School, where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He was an All-Area selection at Kinsley High School in football and also was a member of the school's basketball team ... Tallied 88 tackles, 43 tackles for loss and 27 sacks en route to being named Honorable Mention All-State ... Named All-CPL First Team three times ... Named All-Area and First Team 2A All-State his senior season and All-CPL four seasons as a basketball player.

College career

In 2009: (Sr.): Started in all 12 games at left tackle, earning Honorable Mention All-Conference USA by coaches and 1st Team All-Conference USA by Phil Steele as well as Rivals Publications... In 2008: (Jr.): Played in 12 games, starting in eight ... Started the final seven games at left tackle ... Missed one game, the Marshall contest ... Junior College:(So.) A Second Team Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference on the offensive line at Dodge City Community College... Made the transition from the defensive to offensive line ... (Fr.) Professional career

After going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, Burkhart signed a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks. After being released from the Seahawks due to injury, Burkhart signed with the New York Jets. After he was again released due to injury, he then signed with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL for the 2010 season. Burkhart signed with the BC Lions of the CFL for 2011 season. Burkhart retired from playing football before the 2012 season.

Post Football career

He took over as the head football coach for his alma mater, Kinsley High School, starting in June 2016.
