Kundara (Malayalam: കുണ്ടറ ) is a census town in Kerala and is part of Kollam Metropolitan Area, India.[2] Kundara is situated 13 km east of Kollam city, 14 km west of Kottarakkara and 24 km north of Paravur. Kundara is a historical town significant for its place in the Indian freedom struggle.[3] Kundara was once the Industrial hub of Southern Kerala with prominent industries like Kerala Electricals Limited, Aluminium , Aluminium Industry Limited of Kundara, Lakshmi Starch company etc operating from here. Most Industrial units became sick industries and got shut down. Kundara is aiming for a revival of industrial tradition through Technopark Kollam.[4][5]
Kundara is located in the shores of Kanjiracode lake a branch of Ashtamudi Lake which has one of the most finest quality Green chromide (Karimeen) fish available in India. This lake recently received Marine Stewardship council recognition for sustainable fishing.[6]
Kundara consists of four main areas namely, Elamballoor, Aasupathrimukk, Mukkada and Aarumurikkada.
History
Kundara has a prominent place in history of Kerala and independence struggle of India due to the Kundara proclamation that happened here in 1809 by Velu Thampi Dalawa then Diwan of Travancore princely state.[7]
Demographics
As of the 2011 India census.[9] Kundara is a Census Town city in district of Kollam, Kerala. The Kundara Census Town has population of 33,959 of which 16,198 are males while 17,761 are females as per report released by Census India 2011. Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 3243 which is 9.55% of total population of Kundara. In Kundara Census Town, Female Sex Ratio is of 1096 against state average of 1084. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Kundara is around 993 compared to Kerala state average of 964. Literacy rate of Kundara town is 93.99% lower than state average of 94.00%. In Kundara, Male literacy is around 96.42% while female literacy rate is 91.80%.
Politics
Kundara itself is a constituency of Legislative Assembly of Kerala its sitting M.L.A, J. Mercykutty Amma is a minister in the state cabinet. Kundara is a part of Kollam and has a Parliament constituency.
Transport
- Kundara and Kundara East are the railway stations in Kundara town. It's a rare case in Kerala to have more than one railway station in a town.[10][11]
- National Highway 744 (India) and National Highway 183 (India) passes through Kundara and numerous private operators and KSRTC buses ply through Kundara connecting Kundara with Thiruvananthapuram, Mavelikkara, Kollam, Tenkasi, Chengannur etc
- Nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport
- There is backwaters nearby Kundara there is no formal boat services, few country boats and house boats uses this stretch
